About this role

The Port of Seattle is a public organization operating aviation, maritime, and other regional facilities. It is seeking a Graduate Intern in Machine Learning to support ML and AI prototypes and pilot projects through problem definition, data preparation, model development, evaluation, deployment, and user feedback.

What you'll do:

  • Communicate effectively in verbal or written form with users
  • Gather and understand user requirements and use cases
  • Understand the available data sources
  • Devise and develop the means for collecting and cleansing operational data
  • Architect ML/AI prototypes that fit the requirements and review them with users
  • Develop and test prototype ML or Deep Learning models
  • Evaluate models using quantitative methods
  • In collaboration with the users, evaluate the effectiveness of ML/AI prototypes and make recommendations for follow-on work

  • A student – You must be currently enrolled in a Master's degree or a recent graduate (< 1 year ago) in a Master's degree program in Computer Science, CS & Engineering (CS/CSE), Statistics/Data Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), Physics, Mathematics, or Operations Research (OR) / Industrial Engineering

  • Technology – You have experience in using some or all of the following: Python, Keras, PyTorch, TensorFlow, R, SQL, NoSQL, C/C++, Go, CUDA
  • Knowledgeable – You understand Machine Learning and Deep Learning techniques and their application to Generative AI, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Speech Recognition, Translation, and other related domains
  • Communication – You can effectively communicate with users to gather and understand their requirements and translate them into actionable steps
  • Analysis – You are able to identify data sources, analyze the available data, devise and deploy the means for collecting and cleansing the data, create training datasets, and create and test the models that provide predictive analysis to live operational data
  • Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be scheduled between Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (20 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role
  • Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington State within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State
