Why does the job exist?

The Graphic Designer position exists to provide dedicated design and print production capacity for the department's reprographics shop. How does it get done?

The primary responsibilities of this position will include:

*  Assist walk-in and call-in customers by answering questions about print services, taking job requests, clarifying specifications, and providing guidance on paper, sizing, finishes, turnaround expectations and guidance to customers
*  Answer phones and monitor shared communication channels, routing inquiries appropriately and ensuring timely follow-up.
*  Provide front-counter support, including intake of print jobs, logging requests, and verifying that source files meet production
requirements.
*  Obtain quotes from vendors for specialty materials, outsourced print jobs, and equipment-related needs; compare options and present recommendations to shop leadership.
*  Initiate and process purchase requests for supplies, materials, and minor equipment, following established procurement procedures.
*  Management and inventory of tracked assets.

Who are the customers?

The organization as a whole and the IT Support Team.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have preferred education and/or experience in the following areas:

*  Comfort with assisting customers over the phone, at the front desk, or through the ticket queue.
*  Time spent in a print shop prepping files for offset, digital, and large format jobs.
*  Troubleshooting when something doesn't go as planned.
*  Full job ownership from start through cutting, folding, laminating, and bindery.
*  Coordination with customers, vendors, and management along the way to get quotes and make purchases happen.
*  Basic computer, printer, or networking troubleshooting.
* Genuine enjoyment working with customers and isn't afraid of technology, whether that means fixing an issue on the spot or figuring it out as they go.

Minimum Qualification

High School Diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in a print production/shop setting, with regular use of computers, design software, and print production equipment including offset presses, digital printers, large-format printers, cutters, and finishing equipment. The position requires frequent interaction with requesting divisions and department staff in person, by phone, email, and through job/print requests, to scope projects and coordinate production timelines.

Duties include operating and troubleshooting print production equipment, preparing and loading paper stock and print media,  and performing routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting on shop hardware and networked print devices. The job may require lifting and carrying paper stock, print supplies, and equipment, occasionally weighing up to 50 pounds. The position involves bending, standing, and walking throughout the shop for extended periods, and working around active production.
