About this role

The Physics Department of the University of Washington invites applicants to two named postdoctoral fellowship programs. The awards under these programs are intended to support outstanding early career researchers who have recently received, or who are about to receive, their Ph.D. degree or equivalent. Hans G. Dehmelt Fellowships are available in all areas of experimental and theoretical physics. David J. Thouless Fellowships, hosted by the Thouless Institute for Quantum Matter, are available in the interdisciplinary areas of experimental and theoretical quantum matter and information.

  • Fellowships are awarded for a period of three years. Appointments must commence within nine months of the award date.
  • Fellows are provided a salary of $84,000/year plus a research fund of $10,000 per year to be used in support of research and professional travel during their Fellowship.
  • A relocation incentive of $2,000 is provided to assist with moving expenses.
  • Additional details and a link to the nomination form can be found here.

Postdoctoral Scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement, unless agreed exclusion criteria apply. For more information, please visit the University of Washington Labor Relations website.

The base salary range for this position will be $7,000/month, or as mandated by the U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. The positions are full time and have a 12-month service period.

Nominees are required to have obtained, or have completed all requirements for, the degree of Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in a relevant field before the start of the appointment. They cannot have had more than 24 months of postdoctoral experience from other institutions at the time of appointment. They may not have held a paid or unpaid position on the UW Seattle campus at any time prior to the award being made. Non-US citizens will be required to prove English language proficiency prior to award.

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis and are reviewed once each quarter. For full consideration in Autumn 2026, complete applications must be received by October 31, 2026. The application process begins with nomination by a principal investigator working in the candidate's field who has knowledge of their work and its impact using this form. The nominator can, but need not be, the candidate’s PhD advisor. Nominations will be considered as they arrive. Eligible candidates for whom we are able to identify a supporting faculty member of the UW Department of Physics, will be directed to submit an application through Interfolio. Unsolicited applications will not be considered. The application consists of a curriculum vitae with a full list of publications, at least two letters of recommendation, and a research statement (2-3 pages including figures and a few references). Inquiries can be directed to [email protected].
