About this role

Knobelsdorff is a turnkey specialty contractor specializing in Automation, Electric, Energy, and Power Services. The Hardware Engineer Intern will assist with industrial automation hardware schematics, layouts, wiring drawings, bills of materials, documentation, and quality verification. The role also involves collaborating across technical teams, troubleshooting hardware issues, supporting industrial networking systems, and participating in customer-site startup and commissioning activities.

What you'll do:

  • Assisting in designing industrial automation hardware schematics that meet customer requirements
  • Create hardware layouts, wiring drawings, and bills of materials
  • Collaborate with software, controls, manufacturing, and panel shop teams to ensure successful project execution and production handoff
  • Develop and execute hardware documentation and quality verification processes prior to production release
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware-related issues during development, manufacturing, and startup phases
  • Ensure hardware designs comply with applicable industry standards and regulatory requirements, including UL508A standards
  • Support the implementation of industrial networking and communication systems
  • Support occasional startup and commissioning activities at customer sites
  • Other duties as assigned

What they're looking for:

  • Currently pursuing an education in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or other disciplines
  • Ability to work in our Eagan, MN location 5 days/week
  • Ability to report progress daily to the leadership team, to ensure intern tasks and projects are completed on time
  • Excellent organizational skills including attention to detail and multitasking skills
  • Competency in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Exceptional verbal, written and presentation skills
  • Willing to work on some out-of-town projects
  • Must be able to sit, stand, kneel, stoop, walk, and sit for long periods of time
  • Must be physically capable of lifting and carrying up to 80 lbs
  • Must be able to work outdoors in varying conditions
