Head Athletic Trainer – Job Description

Position Title: Head Athletic Trainer
Department: Sports Performance / Medical
Reports To: Director of Operations and Head Coach
Position Summary

During the Term, Employee shall have such powers as may be prescribed by Employer. Employee shall engage in reasonable efforts to perform those functions generally performed by Head Athletic Trainers, in the professional sports industry, including but not limited to:

As Head Athletic Trainer, reporting to the Director of Operations and Head Coach, the employee will:
  • Performs as Certified Head Athletic Trainer duties in managing the health care of players. Health care includes, but is not limited to: first aid / emergency care, on-site injury evaluation, application of appropriate modalities, developing rehabilitation and prevention programs, as well as conducting rehabilitation and making medical referrals.
  • Expected to work all Miami FC home matches and travel on all road trips with the team.
  • Communicate effectively with medical staff, coaches and athletes.
  • Practice and game coverage including travel.
  • Assist the Sports Performance department in planning, delivering and evaluating physical development sessions.
  • Maintain computerized injury and treatment logs and share with technical staff on a daily basis.
  • Assist with practical implementation of appropriate nutrition and hydration strategies for players.
  • Preparation of field for practices and games.
  • Assist with periodization of the teams' off-season, preseason, and in season programs.
  • Coordinate and schedule physical examinations and medical referrals for player/athletes to determine their ability to practice and compete.
  • Assist in the engagement, development, and management of the Miami FC training staff, including, if and as applicable student athletic trainers.
  • Comply with OSHA standards regarding blood borne pathogens.
  • Order, maintain and inventory supplies and clinical equipment.
  • Keep training room and clinic area safe, clean and organized.
  • Maintain a complete and up to date roster of player health and participation records in the League-provided electronic medical record system.
  • Electronically document first report of injury, player treatments, and return to play dates for various purposes.
  • Establish and maintain positive training room culture.
  • Compile reports as required by USL.
  • Provide medical assistance to the Team Physician.
  • Under the direction of the supervising Physician, assist the organization and maintenance of pharmaceutical inventory and records.
  • Supervise assistant trainers, aides and volunteers as applicable.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills required to work effectively with players, coaches, other team personnel and USL staff.
  • Record keeping and documentation of all sport science statistics, injury reports, rehabilitation programs and doctor recommendations. Manages player status reports to the USL league (United Soccer League).
  • Counsel players regarding dietary needs, nutritional supplements and League/FIFA banned substances.
  • Participate in community service/educational programs related to sports medicine.
  • Participate in activities/meetings/programs as required by USL.
  • Work with Human Resources to submit timely and accurate injury reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications
  • Certified Athletic Trainer (BOC Certified) in good standing.
  • Eligible for and maintains appropriate state licensure/certification.
  • Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification.
  • Experience working in collegiate, professional, or elite-level sports preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of injury prevention, evaluation, rehabilitation, emergency care, and return-to-play protocols.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to travel extensively and work evenings, weekends, holidays, and all match days.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, run, bend, kneel, and lift athletic and medical equipment.
  • Ability to respond quickly to on-field emergencies.
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to travel frequently with the team.
