About the Department
Under general supervision, performs work at the full-performance level providing a variety of health and human services program activities in a helper capacity. Work involves extensive client contact. Often performs work independently under the direction of and in consultation with a professional staff member. Certain areas of assignment may require specific training prior to or within a specified period of time after employment. Work requires the use of a personal automobile for local travel. May be required to deal with situations which are potentially dangerous to client and worker. Performs related work as required.
Position Duties
Breastfeeding Education & Support
Provide education, counseling, and individualized breastfeeding assistance to pregnant and breastfeeding WIC participants.
Deliver prenatal and postpartum breastfeeding education to individuals and groups.
Train, guide, and support breastfeeding peer counselors; coordinate their activities and provide technical assistance.
Supply educational materials, resources, and referrals based on participant needs.
Conduct nutrition assessments for prenatal and pediatric participants.
Evaluate health, dietary, socioeconomic, and nutritional information.
Provide nutrition education aligned with WIC guidelines.
Identify nutritional concerns and make appropriate referrals.
Perform height/weight measurements and hemoglobin finger-stick screenings.
Plot and document growth measurements.
Ask medical and health-related questions needed for participant assessments.
Provide immunization screening and identify follow-up needs.
Verify income, household information, and residency eligibility.
Assist with certification and recertification processes.
Provide referrals to healthcare providers and community resources.
Document follow-up, referrals, and services provided.
Visit postpartum WIC participants in the hospital when requested.
Provide breastfeeding education during the postpartum period.
Maintain inventory of breast pumps and breastfeeding supplies.
Track distribution and request orders as needed.
Maintain participant records, files, forms, and documentation.
Complete required data entry and program reports.
Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and spaces.
Properly handle hazardous materials, sharps, and regulated waste.
Follow all WIC policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
Conduct outreach to increase awareness and participation in WIC.
Maintain relationships with partner organizations and authorized vendors.
Provide educational presentations to community groups.
Serve as the WIC Farmers Market Liaison.
Represent WIC at community events.
Support special projects, program initiatives, and cross-program needs.
Assist staff as needed to meet operational requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
Training: Must be able to pass a written test at the eighth grade level.
Special Requirements for the Division of Health:
Applicant must be certified as a Home Health Aide or must successfully pass the written competency evaluation given by the local agency prior to employment. Certification requires completion of a minimum of 75 hours of training including a minimum 16 hours of practicum. Applicant must possess a current driver's license and availability of a car for continuous use shall be a prerequisite for employment.
Note: For positions designated as Breastfeeding Counselor, WIC, positive past or present breastfeeding experience required.
