THE POSITION

Picture yourself at the center of roadway operations that matter to every driver in Pennsylvania! As a Highway Foreman 2 for the Department of Transportation, you take charge of daily field work that protects and improves our highways. You will help plan, direct, and complete essential tasks that keep communities connected. This job allows you to build strong teamwork and pride through hands-on leadership!


DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position oversees a highway maintenance crew that carries out year-round work to keep roadways safe and functional. The role requires leadership, planning, and sound judgment in directing maintenance operations. As a Highway Foreman 2, you will perform the following duties:

  • Crew Supervision: Lead and direct maintenance crews through daily assignments and project planning
  • Maintenance Oversight: Coordinate and guide tasks such as patching, sealing, drainage work, and emergency response
  • Record Management: Document field activities and report unusual events, injuries, and equipment issues clearly and promptly
  • Safety Leadership: Select proper work zone controls and promote safe practices for crews and the public
  • Training Direction: Teach employees correct tool use, equipment operation, and maintenance procedures
  • Work Planning: Schedule and evaluate work, recommend priorities, and manage staffing and materials

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Overtime, shift work and travel may be required for emergencies, training and specialized maintenance operations. Dual shifts are required for winter operations.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

Organization or Location Restriction:

  • This posting is restricted to Department of Transportation, Berks County employees only. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience as a Highway Foreman 1; or
  • Two years of experience in the performance of lead work or skilled tradesman duties on a highway maintenance or construction project; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirement:
  • This position requires possession of a valid Class C Pennsylvania Driver's License.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

This position is subject to the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement or memorandum of understanding.
