About this role
WSP is an engineering and professional services firm serving communities across transportation and other infrastructure markets. The Early Career Electrical Engineer will support transportation systems projects involving roadway electrical systems, tolling, intelligent transportation systems, communications infrastructure, inspections, planning, data analysis, design support, and project delivery for the Illinois Tollway.
What you'll do:
- Support roadway electrical, tolling, ITS, fiber communications, and transportation technology initiatives for the Illinois Tollway
- Participate in field inspections, condition assessments, and asset inventory activities throughout the Tollway system
- Maintain accurate inventories, asset condition data, and inspection records for transportation technology assets
- Prepare technical reports, condition assessments, inspection documentation, repair cost estimates, technical memoranda, and engineering recommendations
- Support planning, operations, and maintenance activities related to transportation technology infrastructure
- Participate in construction walkthroughs, system acceptance activities, and handover reviews for maintenance and capital improvement projects
- Analyze asset, maintenance, and operational data to identify trends, evaluate system performance, support lifecycle management activities, and inform engineering decisions
- Review plans, specifications, shop drawings, and construction submittals under the guidance of senior engineers
- Assist with evaluating existing transportation technology assets and identifying opportunities for system improvements and technology enhancements
- Coordinate with Tollway staff, consultants, contractors, and multidisciplinary project teams
What they're looking for:
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering
- 0-3 years of relevant experience
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment
- Capacity to handle multiple tasks and manage competing priorities with minimal direction
- Ability to perform field work and site visits throughout the Illinois Tollway system
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain EIT preferred
- Internship or work experience related to transportation infrastructure, roadway lighting, ITS, communications systems, tolling systems, or electrical systems
- Familiarity with GIS, CAD, databases, or asset management systems
- Interest in transportation technology, infrastructure operations, and emerging mobility solutions
