Intern, GIS Analyst

Southern Star is a natural gas transportation company serving America’s heartland. The GIS Analyst Intern will gain practical experience with enterprise GIS databases, spatial analysis tools, mapping applications, and field asset information while supporting data quality, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance projects. The role also involves collaborating with GIS professionals and multiple business departments on data analytics, visualization, and process improvement initiatives.

What you'll do:

• Communicate, network, and manage stakeholders effectively
• Participate in the project planning process (short-term, long-term, cross-functional projects)
• Stay updated with data analytics products/tools and business strategies
• Work closely with business stakeholders to understand their data needs and provide actionable insights
• Partner with business units to gain business process knowledge
• Troubleshoots problems, identify possible solutions, and resolve issues
• Troubleshoot data quality issues between data sources and visualization tools
• Interpret data to identify business trends, conduct root cause analysis of business problems, or suggest areas for improvement
• Writes queries or reports to provide data for various analytical projects
• Develop and maintain the support structure for visualization tools such as Power BI
• Provide training and support to team members on data tools and best practices
• Maintain comprehensive documentation of data processes, methodologies, and findings

What they're looking for:

• Bachelor's degree in business, computer science, computer information systems, or data science/data analytics
• 0-2 years of experience
• Basic knowledge of business processes and procedures
• Knowledge of database systems such as SQL Server databases
• Knowledge of querying APIs for data usage in dashboarding solutions
• Basic knowledge of structured and unstructured data and statistical tools
• Understanding of statistical methods and their applications in business contexts
• Basic knowledge of data quality methodologies
• Proficiency in analytical and visualization tools
• Ability to present complex data insights in a clear and concise manner to non-technical stakeholders
• Ability to work independently and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment
• Positive attitude and adaptability
