About this role

The City of Troy is a municipal government employer. The Human Resources Intern will gain practical experience in recruitment, employment compliance, employee engagement, HR data analysis, onboarding, and related department initiatives while collaborating with HR staff and city leaders.

What you'll do:

  • The Intern will learn the practical application of:
  • Steps in the recruiting and hiring process, including: posting job openings, reviewing applications, participating in interviews, creating and maintaining related electronic records
  • The importance of employment law and compliance, especially regarding employment eligibility, confidentiality, proper collection/maintenance of employment-related records, collective bargaining agreements, City rules and regulations and State/Federal legislation
  • The interrelationship of Human Resources and other City departments in the areas of employee selection, new employee orientation, payroll issues related to hiring and termination, and related functions
  • Participate in department meetings. Assist with and participate in events and initiatives focused on employee engagement
  • Research and collect data for various department initiatives. Collect, review and summarize data. Create reports, correspondence and presentation materials
  • May assist with the on-boarding and exit interview process
  • May assist with the creation of ADA compliant job descriptions
  • Assist with regular office duties and performing other job-related duties as assigned

  • Pursuing a Bachelor or Master Degree with a focus in Human Resources
  • Ability to multi-task and take initiative
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Possess and display a high level of integrity, accuracy, dependability, and confidentiality
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, Excel
  • Must have at the time of application, and maintain, a valid Michigan driver license with a good driving record (based on City of Troy standards). Out of state applicants must provide current driving record at time of application and obtain State of Michigan license within one (1) month of appointment
