About this role
Knorr Brake Company, part of Knorr-Bremse Group, manufactures braking systems and other equipment for mass transit customers. The company is seeking a Systems Engineering Intern to support the engineering, deployment, testing, and lifecycle support of the LEADER® train control product family through software development, data analysis, and onboard hardware activities.
What you'll do:
- The Intern shall contribute to the engineering, deployment and support of the LEADER® product family, working alongside the systems engineers assigned to each railroad program
- Development and maintenance of automation scripts supporting engineering systems on Linux hosts
- Extension of the group's test automation harness, execution of regression campaigns across multiple projects, and production of pass, fail and error summary reporting
- Diagnosis and correction of defects in the group's tools, covering data accuracy, unit conversion and visualization
- Deployment and configuration of engineering web applications and virtual machine environments
- Preparation, imaging and commissioning of onboard LEADER® hardware, if necessary
- Analysis of recorded locomotive data in support of incident investigation and product performance review
- Preparation of design and hand-over documentation to the standard required for internal review
What they're looking for:
- Enrollment in an accredited Bachelor of Science or Master of Science program in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, with at least two (2) years completed by the start of the term
- Demonstrable capability in at least one scripting or programming language, Python preferred
- Proficient use of Unix/Linux environments and the command line
- Data analysis capability using Excel, Python, MATLAB or equivalent
- Use of the standard Microsoft Office suite for communication and documentation
- Ability to carry an assigned task to completion, and to escalate an impediment once identified
- Coursework or project experience in control systems, embedded systems or signal processing
- Exposure to virtualization, web application deployment or relational databases
- Familiarity with version control and continuous integration tooling, Perforce and Jenkins in particular
- Interest in rail operations, train dynamics or locomotive systems
- Python preferred
