Posting Details

DPS houses the New Mexico State Police and provides many services to the entire law enforcement community. DPS is the FBI designated Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Systems Agency for the State of New Mexico.

DPS has one of the most complex networks in the State of New Mexico. It consists of over 50 physical offices including the DPS headquarters, the NM Law Enforcement Academy, 3 forensic labs, 3 911 communications / dispatch centers, 12 NMSP district offices, and a significant number of permanent and transitory sub-stations in key locations throughout state including the Governor's Mansion.  In addition to the physical locations, the network consists of 650 NMSP patrol units, 1 helicopter and several mobile command centers.  DPS systems are accessed - with no tolerance for downtime - 24 hours per day, 7 days per week by DPS civilian staff, NMSP, and all federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies (LEAs) needing access to mission critical Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Systems and many other systems. DPS ITD provides technical support for first responders at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, New Mexico State Fair, and Zozobra.

ITD's Service Management Bureau provides Tier 1 and Tier 2 support to all the customers mentioned above.

Why does the job exist?

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is seeking an IT Support Technician to join the Tier 1 Service Desk at DPS headquarters in Santa Fe. The Service Desk provides statewide technical support to State Police officers, civilian staff, and law enforcement agencies across New Mexico. When an officer can't log in or a critical system goes down, this is the team they call.

This position reports to the IT Support Supervisor and is part of a rebuilt IT team focused on supporting and modernizing the technology New Mexico's law enforcement community depends on.

We're looking for a solutions-oriented technician with solid troubleshooting skills and hands-on experience supporting end users. The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently, communicates clearly with non-technical staff, and takes pride in resolving issues efficiently and thoroughly. You should be reliable, detail-oriented, and ready to contribute your technical knowledge to a growing team.

The DPS IT Division (ITD) supports the agency's mission of keeping New Mexico's public and law enforcement officers safe. Our work directly affects officer safety and effectiveness across the state, and our team takes pride in that responsibility. ITD leadership is committed to your professional growth through training, mentorship, and challenging work assignments.

If you want to join a team whose work matters to New Mexico's communities and the officers who serve them, we'd like to hear from you.

How does it get done?

This position mainly provides support to NMSP and all Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Agencies within the state of New Mexico.  IT support is provided to officers and dispatchers remotely, working with both office-based and in-vehicle computing systems running software specifically utilized within the law enforcement field as well as standard IT applications such as the Microsoft 365 Suite. We primarily support Windows, iOS, and Android devices.

This IT Support Technician position works on-site at DPS Headquarters (HQ) in Santa Fe during the day shift from 8:00am to 05:00pm Monday through Friday and is a mission critical team member to DPS Information Technology Division (ITD). This position requires a very responsible and self-motivated individual who is willing to work alone in sometimes high stress situations that require attention to detail, the ability to understand and quickly assess a technical issue, and the problem-solving technical skills needed to resolve emergency service issues as they arise, with the mental clarity required to know when to escalate critical issues. Strong communication skills are required to effectively work with internal specialists and vendor support, and to notify stakeholders when critical issues arise.

Most of the time there should not be any critical issues to resolve, and this IT Support Technician position will take helpdesk calls, provide user account management services, work on facility access requests, triage or resolve non-critical issues, contribute to our technical knowledge base by creating or updating articles, document work done, keep ticket queues low, and perform other duties as assigned.

The position provides service to customers in a professional, timely and efficient manner, and acts as an interface between IT and customers to ensure that customers¿ needs are completely addressed in a satisfactory manner.

Currently all SMB staff are required to participate in an on-call rotation. When the bureau is fully staffed this would mean being available for 24 hours on a weekend, approximately once every 7 weeks. You may also occasionally be asked to cover shift absences for teammates, on a short-notice basis.

Who are the customers?

The DPS Service Management Bureau (SMB) provides critical public safety support services to all law enforcement agencies operating in the state. SMB contains the 24/7/365 IT service desk used by both DPS/NMSP personnel and over 12,000 other public safety personnel throughout the State of New Mexico, including all local, state, and tribal law enforcement officers, dispatchers, courts, and detention centers.

Ideal Candidate

- Basic technical support and troubleshooting for computer hardware, software, and/or network related problems.

- Experience working with computer software and peripherals within an enterprise environment or professional setting.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

- Experience supporting and managing law enforcement and criminal justice data.

Minimum Qualification

High School Diploma or equivalent and six (6) months of related work experience in providing technical support to end users for computer hardware, software, and/or network-related problems. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) months may substitute for the required experience

Employment Requirements

Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and fingerprinting in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations; and is conditional pending results.  Continued employment is contingent upon remaining felony free, per Section 5.12.1.1 of the Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy.

In addition, the selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a current Defensive Driving Certificate from the State of New Mexico; or pass and receive the Defensive Driving Certificate within six (6) months of date of hire.

Working Conditions

In office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting.

May be required to work overtime. May be required to work on-call duty shifts as part of our commitment to essential 24/7 operation. Must be able to lift 35 lbs.
