Position Description
The Student Laboratory Technician assists in organization, preparation, and maintenance of Wake Tech Biotechnology labs.
Responsibilities and Duties (*Essential Functions)
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the primary job functions herein described.
*Prepares and sets-up materials for lab exercises, including preparing solutions and media, supplies, instruments, and equipment
*Responsible for clean-up, disinfection/decontamination, disposal, and storage of laboratory materials and waste
*Maintains biologic supplies for the labs, including perishable and living specimens such as cultures, plants, etc.
*Implements and promotes lab safety by storing waste and chemicals in an OSHA-approved manner; keeps lab rooms and prep areas clean and free of clutter; and informs instructors of any safety concerns
Assists Biotechnology Instructors in laboratory equipment / supply organization to facilitate efficient lab set-up and student access to needed equipment and supplies
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Good organizational skills
Knowledge of lab safety procedures and processes
Good communication skills both written and verbal
Ability to perform calculations necessary to prepare chemical and biological solutions
Ability to perform normal duties with minimal supervision
Excellent reading comprehension, active listening, and critical thinking skills
Minimum Requirements:
Current student in Wake Tech Biotechnology Associate’s Degree program
Preferences:
30 credit hours of Biotechnology coursework completed
Experience using laboratory instruments such as balances, pH meter, autoclave
