Summary
About the Position: This job announcement is for a Machinist position at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District. This position will be located at the Illinois Waterway Project Office in Peoria, IL. ???????This position is being filled under the Direct Hiring Authority (DHA).Duties
- Carry out assignments which require special adaptation and extension of the use of conventional and CNC machine tools with little to no supervision.
- Use specialized and non-conventional machine tools such as jig borers, lathes, mills for conventional and CNC, portable boring machine, etc
- Travel to field locations to measure, visualize, and discuss equipment functions or general needs with field personnel in order to adequately begin machining or fabrication process.
- Plan and lay out work. Studies single, sets, and series of blueprints, drawings, and sketches featuring orthographic, isometric, and other projections of items to be worked.
- Adjust and set speeds and feeds of machinery and determines coolants, lubricants, or abrasives to e used, taking into consideration the characteristics of both the machinery and the materials to be worked.
- Set up and operate conventional and CNC (computer numerically controlled) machine tools.
- Write CNC files programs for HAAS Mills and Lathes.
- Measure, visualize, and discuss equipment functions or general needs with field personnel in order to adequately begin machining or fabrication process.

Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability To Use Hand Tools for Machine Shop Ability To Use Shop Drawings Knowledge of Metals Measurement and Layout Operation of Machine Tools Technical Competence ??????? PHYSICAL EFFORT: Majority of work requires light to moderate physical effort in the handling of equipment and tools. While working with machine tools, may stand on concrete floors for prolonged periods of time and is required to stand, stoop, bend, and reach. On occasion, may be required to lift and carry items or materials weighing in excess of 50 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in well-lighted, heated, and ventilated shop with concrete floors. Exposed to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, noises, and fumes. Subject to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust in the lungs, cuts, bruises, injuries to hands from the use of machine and hand tools, skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, abrasive compounds, and to strains from infrequent moving, lifting, and handling of heavy items. Wears safety glasses, safety shoes, and other safety apparel and equipment as required. During field assignments, works outdoors or inside, subject to a variety of weather conditions, occasionally cramped quarters, etc.How You Will Be Evaluated
