The Bureau is responsible for providing traffic engineering leadership and expertise to provide for a safe and efficient transportation system.
The Bureau manages the State Access Management Manual which details the administrative procedures and engineering methods used by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) to actively manage access to and from the state highway system. The Bureau assures compliance with design regulations and policies by managing related standard drawings and specifications related to all traffic and transportation elements.

As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrate leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.

Why does the job exist?

 
The Manager Engineering position provides plan reviews of design plans in the areas of permanent signing and striping, roadway lighting, and signalization and to a lesser extent construction signing.

In some cases, the position may require the production of plans for these areas with the exception of construction signing. 

Responsibilities also include review and/or production of various traffic studies, including but not limited to signal warrant studies, speed studies, gap studies, capacity studies, etc. 

Researching and compiling information for the formulation and modification of standard drawings, details, and specifications is also a major responsibility.

How does it get done?

 
The key responsibilities for the position are the supervision of the Engineer Professional Staff as well as providing support for the NMDOT Design Regions and Districts in the development of construction plans.

In addition, creation and revision of standard drawings and specifications will be required.  Traffic analysis and review of traffic analysis are also key components.

This job is performed for the public, citizens of New Mexico, and the NMDOT Design Regions and District staff.

Ideal Candidate

 
The ideal candidate will have preferred education and/or experience in the following:

* Traffic analysis, permanent signing and striping, signalization, and roadway lighting. 
* Developing standard drawings and specifications.
* Researching and utilizing engineering research publications and websites.

Minimum Qualification

 
Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and five (5) years of engineering experience, one (1) of which must be as a Licensed Professional Engineer. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be certified by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.

Employment Requirements

 
Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment. Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required and employment is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

 
Work is primarily performed in an office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Occasional field visits to sites with uneven terrain, roadsides, construction sites. Travel throughout the state and occasional out of state travel may be required.
