Job Description

 

POSITION OBJECTIVE
Drivers are responsible for servicing assigned route(s) with the collection and hauling of waste and
recycling materials to a disposal site or recycling plant. Commodities include landfill waste,
recyclable and compostable materials in addition to other identified discarded materials. Assist in
carrying out the university¿s goals regarding climate neutrality and sustainable operations through
waste and landfill reduction and increased recycling services.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Provide waste and/or recycling removal services to customers on assigned route(s) by emptying
trash/recycle receptacles into truck and hauling to off campus disposal site or warehouse
storage location. Replace trash/recycling receptacles neatly at the curb or designated storage
area. (70%)
2. Conduct pre/post trip inspections daily. Notify supervisor or designated team leader of any
university vehicle damage, collisions or injuries, as well as moving or parking violations. (9%)
3. Operate truck in a safe manner in compliance with all departmental policies as well as local,
state and federal motor vehicle driving regulations. Ensure that materials do not fall off truck; if
materials do fall off of truck, ensure that they are safely retrieved from roadways. (10%)


NONESSENTIAL FUNCITONS
1. Clean up waste spills and overflows. (1%)
2. Assist supervisor in implementing university material management procedures and climate
neutrality and sustainable operation goals. (1%)
3. Ensure that commodities do not become mixed during pick-up, transport and drop-off.
Remove other identified discarded materials from assigned locations. (1%)
4. When assigned remove all boxed regulated medical waste from designated SaniPak location
and unloaded as directed, in accordance with law and policy. (1%)
5. Maintain accurate records of commodities collected and time reporting. (1%)
6. Notify supervisor if pickup locations are dirty or unsanitary or of any inappropriate
/unidentified materials left at dumpsters or compactors. (1%)

7. Observe all proper safety procedures when handling waste and driving to avoid injuries and
scattering debris. If objects of excessive weight or size are found on the route, report them to
the supervisor(s) rather than risking injury. Inform supervisor(s) of all injuries that occur while on
the job, regardless of severity. Secure vehicle tools and supplies at the end of each shift. Leave
vehicles clean for other drivers. (1%)
8. Notify supervisor or designee of any potential problems, including but not limited to:
dumpsters or compactors that have become full, waste disposal violations, inappropriate
dumpster use, and inappropriate placement or sorting of materials for pick-up, and challenges
to pick-up routes and schedules. (1%)
9. Suggest cost saving and program efficiency initiatives to the supervisor. Communicate daily
with supervisor to report achievements, progress and problems. Actively seek out and suggest
improvements to operations. During the course of the daily work shift, report any quality
control issues or problems identified in the building to the Supervisor, and if possible make
appropriate recommendations to solve the matter. Recognize when assistance, training, and
direction are needed so that work objectives are accomplished in a safe, complete, efficient,
and timely manner. (1%)
10. Maintain training and certification on the operation of the forklift truck and all other campus
vehicles as well as all university-directed trainings as directed by the CWRU Environmental
Health & Safety office. (1%)
11. Perform similar duties as assigned. (1%)


CONTACTS
Department: Daily contact with supervisor or designated team leader and, co-workers to exchange
information and receive additional assignments.
University: Regular contact with staff and faculty during regular duties including material
collections and bin deliveries.
External: Regular contact with contracted material vendors to facilitate pick-ups.
Students: Regular contact with students.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
No supervision


QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: At least 2 years of experience in heavy labor is required, preferably in a large
institutional or industrial setting; waste industry experience is a plus. Must have at least 2 years of
experience operating vehicles similar to those that are routinely used on the job.
Education/licensing: High school education. A valid driver license free of significant violations and
maintaining an acceptable driving record are conditions of employment. CDL preferred and CDL
eligibility required.


REQUIRED SKILLS
1. Ability to read and understand a map.

2. Ability to perform physical requirements of the job (prolonged physical exertions, including
repetitive lifting, pushing, pulling and climbing in and out of large capacity trucks.
3. Ability to work in all weather conditions.
4. Good written and verbal communication skills to be able to effectively and professionally
communicate with internal and external customers.
5. Must be able to perform simple mathematics.
6. Must be responsible, self-motivated, able to work independently and capable of staying on task
with only routine supervision.
7. Must be willing to learn about and help to educate the campus community on waste reduction
and recycling processes.
8. Working knowledge of, or willingness to learn, basic computing skills as they become necessary
to carrying out the goals of the material management program.
9. Ability to demonstrate successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned
with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on
conflict of commitment and interest.
10. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
11. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.


WORKING CONDITIONS
This position routinely requires extensive physical exertion (lifting, pushing and pulling trash
receptacles weighting up to 75 pounds each from the ground approximately 50-100 times per day)
and entering/exiting the truck approximately 100-200 times per day. The duties require the
employee to always wear appropriate personal protective gear. Current Hepatitis-B inoculation is
required. Other immunizations may be required in the future, as determined by regulatory
requirements. The employee will be directly exposed to excessive noise, fumes, dust, bloodborne
pathogens, chemicals, commercial products, infectious agents, pesticides and herbicides. The
employee will be around moving machinery, powerful industrial vehicles and has access to
restricted area(s). Work environment is mostly outdoors during all types of weather and requires
physical strength and endurance. The employee must be able to pass required physical
examination, including baseline evaluations of hearing and vision. Must provide a home telephone
number, be able to work weekend shifts, and be available to work on an as-needed basis for
emergencies. The standard work shift is 5 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for a 40-hour
work week, working five consecutive days in a row. The employee must be able to switch shifts as
needed. Call-ins, overtime and emergency hours may be required.
