Summary

The PG - Medical Assistant Technician is specialized in work providing patient care and performing clerical duties in a physician practice setting. Emphasis of the work is on assisting physicians in the examination and treatment of patients and performing a variety of clerical tasks. Incumbents report directly to the Office Manager of the practice and is supervised by a provider when performing medical related duties.

Responsibilities

  • Administrative Duties (may include but not limited to): Using computer applications; answering telephones; welcoming patients; updating and filing patient medical record; coding and filling out insurance forms; scheduling appointment; arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services; handling correspondence, billing and bookkeeping. 
  • Obtain authorization for ancillary and/or surgical procedures.
  •  Assist patients who call the office with post-op questions or concerns. 
  • Clinical Duties (may include but not limited to): Taking medical histories; Preparing patients for examination; Assisting the physician during exams and certain procedures; Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens; Performing basic laboratory tests; Drawing blood; Taking electrocardiograms. 
  • Bring patients into the exam room and obtain basic medical information - height, weight, BP, and pulse. 
  • Review medical history, family history, surgical history, and current medications with each patient. 
  • Perform blood draws, ECGs, and other tests as needed.
  •  Responsible for cleaning exam rooms and maintaining them with adequate supplies. 
  • May perform other advanced clinical duties under direction and supervision of a nurse or a physician, as needed based on assigned unit.

  • Performs all other related job duties as assigned.

Experience

Generally, requires 0 to 3 years of related experience.

Education

High school diploma is required.

Skill

Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to exercise sound and independent judgment. Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications.

Credentials

Certification by the American Association of Medical Assistants or credentialing as a Registered Medical Assistant by the American Society of Medical Technologies preferred. American Heart Association and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers may be required at the unit level upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.

Unit Specific Credential

AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) with 6 months validity

Working Conditions

Physical Requirements - Job function requires extended standing or walking. Must be able to carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds. Able to lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with the use of appropriate devices. Jobs in this group require frequent visual acuity to perform activities related to extended use of computers. Environmental Conditions - Jobs in this group are required to function in a fast paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent and stressful situations. Function is subject to inside environmental conditions, with occasional outdoor exposures. Exposure to various environments such as: communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a hospital and medical office environment. May also be exposed to needle sticks, airborne infections, medical gases, X-Ray, chemical exposures and other potential hazards. Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when exposed to infectious/clinical hospital environment.
