About this role

Position Description

The MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research (MKI) seeks two (2) Ph.D. scientists for postdoctoral positions in X-ray astrophysics and instrumentation. The successful applicants will work with the X-ray Detector Lab group at MKI (https://sites.mit.edu/xraydetectorlab/) under the direction of Dr. Eric Miller and Dr. Catherine Grant. Our group of astronomers, detector scientists, engineers, and lab specialists focuses on (1) the astrophysics of galaxy clusters and (2) the development of X-ray detector technology. Lab personnel have led focal plane development for recent NASA Explorer class mission concepts, including the High-Speed Camera on the AXIS Probe concept, and they include active members of the NewAthena WFI consortium, the XRISM Science Team, and the Chandra ACIS instrument team.

The planned work will be tailored to the expertise and interests of the successful applicants, but will focus on one or more of the following tasks:

•Analysis of X-ray observations of galaxy clusters, with a focus on XRISM data to measure the line-of-sight ICM velocity structure;

•Characterization of X-ray imaging detectors and supporting electronics, including testbed design and instrument concept development;

•Development of advanced techniques for background reduction and signal characterization for space-based X-ray imaging instruments.

The successful applicants will be encouraged to pursue independent research projects and to collaborate with other researchers within or outside of MKI, and they will have access to the twin 6.5m Magellan telescopes, to guaranteed observing time on the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and to extensive high-performance computing facilities.

MKI serves as the intellectual home of MIT faculty, research staff, and students engaged in astrophysics. MKI plays major roles in the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), the Magellan Observatory, the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). MKI researchers are also involved in development of new X-ray, optical/IR, and ground-based radio facilities, as well as in related technology development.

Applicants should have or expect to receive a Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, or a related field by Fall 2027. Experience in observational X-ray astronomy or instrumentation are desirable, but all interested candidates are encouraged to apply. The appointments are for two years with the possibility of extension to a third, starting as early as Spring 2027.

MIT is an equal opportunity employer. We strongly encourage applications from individuals from all identities and backgrounds. All qualified applicants will receive equitable consideration for employment based on their experience and qualifications and will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy, religion, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, or national or ethnic origin.
