About This Position:
If you enjoy operating heavy equipment, working outdoors, and seeing the results of your work make a lasting impact, this position offers a rewarding career in bridge construction and maintenance. As part of a skilled team, you'll operate cranes and specialized pile-driving equipment to help build, repair, and strengthen bridges throughout Louisiana. No two days are the same—you'll work on challenging projects, lead crews when needed, maintain equipment, and play an important role in keeping the state's transportation infrastructure safe and reliable. You'll also have the opportunity to support emergency response efforts when your skills are needed most.
While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Position Duties
Three years of experience in mobile equipment operations.

Other Qualifications
Job Duties:
- Operate 35- to 50-ton cranes and pile-driving equipment to install steel, timber, concrete, and sheet piling for bridge construction, repairs, and erosion control projects across the state.
- Load, unload, lift, and transport heavy materials, equipment, bridge components, and oversized structures using cranes and other heavy equipment while maintaining safe work practices.
- Supervise and train bridge maintenance crews in the absence of the Highway Foreman, assigning work, providing guidance, and ensuring projects are completed efficiently and safely.
- Perform routine equipment inspections, minor repairs, and preventive maintenance to keep cranes and heavy equipment in safe operating condition, while supporting emergency and disaster response activities when required.
Position-Specific Details:
Appointment Type: This position may be filled by Probation, Promotion, Job Appointment or Detail to Special Duty.
License Requirements: A valid Class "A" CDL required
Compensation & License Requirements: Below is the starting hourly rate and premium pay amount for this level.
- Mobile Equiptment Operator 2/Heavy - Starting pay from $22.52 up to $36.03 plus an additional $2.00 for every hour worked.
