About this role

The University of Chicago Department of Computer Science seeks part-time lecturers for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 academic years to teach in its Masters Program in Computer Science (MPCS, https://masters.cs.uchicago.edu).

The MPCS is an established professionally-oriented MS program preparing students for technology careers through rigorous foundations and applied skills. Graduates are in demand at top companies for their ability to contribute immediately in challenging technical roles and adapt to rapidly evolving technologies.

The MPCS is expanding its course offerings, and we welcome applications from practitioners and educators with expertise in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning foundations and applications, large language models, generative AI, Computer Security, and related areas.

This position is part-time and is not benefits-eligible. Courses will be assigned on a quarterly basis based on program need. Compensation is paid on a per-course basis in the teaching quarter(s). Applicants must currently be authorized to work in the U.S.

Courses run for nine weeks each academic quarter, with the tenth week reserved for a final project or examination. Instruction may be delivered in person, remotely, or in a hybrid format, subject to program needs and the required university approvals. Courses may be scheduled during the daytime (meeting one to three times per week for up to three hours total) or in the evening (meeting once per week for up to three hours). Specific meeting days and times are set in consultation with the instructor.

While university-level teaching experience is preferred, it is not strictly required. Successful applicants without university-level teaching experience will receive coaching and mentoring from more senior instructors before and during a new hire’s first course.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A graduate degree in Computer Science or a related field at the time of appointment, or 5 years of relevant industry experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS and/or PhD in Computer Science or a related field at the time of appointment, or 10 years of relevant industry experience;
  • Teaching experience in Computer Science or a related field at the undergraduate or graduate level, as either an instructor of record or a teaching assistant;
  • Work experience in a computing-related industry.

Applications must be submitted online through the University of Chicago Jobs website: apply.interfolio.com/196876. Review of applications will begin on December 7, 2026 and continue until the position is filled.

The following materials are required:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Cover letter describing teaching interests and preferred courses. Applicants may propose courses from the current MPCS curriculum or suggest new offerings.
  • A list of three references, including name, title, employer/school and email address

The following optional materials may be submitted:

  • Sample syllabus for a class the applicant has taught before, or would be interested in teaching as part of the MPCS curriculum.
  • Teaching evaluations from past teaching at the university level
