Network Strategy (Capacity Planning) Summer Intern 2027 Job Details | BNSF

BNSF Railway is a major U.S. railroad transporting freight across the country and supporting the movement of essential products and materials. The Capacity Planning Summer Intern will use data, modeling, simulations, and financial analysis to evaluate network performance, identify infrastructure constraints, and support expansion and investment decisions. The role also involves cross-functional collaboration, presentations, and exploring artificial intelligence approaches to capacity modeling.

What you'll do:

• Analyzing corridor, terminal, and hub operations to identify capacity constraints and opportunities for improvement
• Developing analytical models and simulations tools to evaluate the impact of infrastructure changes
• Collaborating across BNSF with team members from Engineering Services, Finance, Network & Field Operations, Economic Development, Marketing and Network Strategy to develop and prioritize investment options
• Creating presentations, visualizations, and recommendations for leaders to support operational and capital planning decisions
• Exploring novel approaches to capacity modeling utilizing Artificial Intelligence tools

What they're looking for:

• Legally authorized to work in the United States and will be at least eighteen (18) years old upon hire
• Does not require BNSF's assistance, now or in the future, (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) to obtain, maintain, or extend employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status)
• Pursuing a Bachelors or Graduate degree in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Supply Chain Management, Data Science, Computer Science or a similar degree program from an accredited university
• Have and will maintain at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA
• Have LESS THAN three (3) years of professional work experience/military experience, EXCLUDING internships, part-time jobs, or positions held while pursuing my undergraduate and/or graduate degree
• Have access to reliable transportation for the duration of the internship to and from my assigned BNSF location
• Familiarity with SQL, Python, Databricks, SAS, Tableau or other analytical/visualization tools
• Experience with simulation including use of AnyLogic
• Experience with supervised machine learning techniques
• Use of ClaudeCode
• Prior intern experience or less than 3 years of work experience involving operations research, simulation, data analytics or related discipline
• Have and will maintain at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA
