General Information

Orientation & Transition Experiences works to provide quality transitional experiences that maximize students’ potential for personal and academic success. Orientation & Transition Experiences is responsible for planning and implementing the University’s Orientation, Welcome Week, and Student Transition programs, which are an integral part of the college experience.

Position Description

The Orientation & Transition Experiences (OTE) New Student Programming Interns are responsible for planning, developing, and implementing content, as well as supporting the overall Orientation and Welcome Week programs for students, parents, and families. The OTE Interns will be involved in planning for spring transfer programming, summer NHS Orientation, summer Transfer Orientation, Family Orientation, and Welcome Week. In addition to program implementation, the NSP Interns will serve as peer supervisors working with Professional Staff and other interns to support and mentor OTE student leaders.

Responsibilities

Administration

  • Manage the department email account(s) (orstaff and wwstaff)
  • Meet regularly 1:1 with your supervisor(s)
  • Attend weekly intern meetings
  • Complete tasks efficiently and thoroughly, updating supervisor(s) and fellow interns as
    needed

Staff Development & Supervision

  • Support recruitment efforts of all student leader roles within OTE
  • Work with professional staff to prepare training materials across student leadership
    positions
  • Serve in a leadership capacity for OUE3311 and other staff training, presenting content
    to all teams
  • Assist with supervision and providing on-going evaluation and feedback for OTE student
    staff
  • Help develop expectations for OTE student staff and hold everyone (student staff and
    interns alike) accountable in meeting them
  • Confront inappropriate staff behavior, including all student teams as well as other
    interns
  • Manage conflicts in a professional and timely manner, looping in supervisor(s) and
    appropriate professional staff
  • Establish boundaries for appropriate and inappropriate actions and behaviors with
    student staff
  • Recognize your role in the supervisor/supervisee relationship; separate work
    relationships from social relationships in a responsible manner
  • Develop and coordinate staff schedules, distributing shifts and accommodating
    requested changes in an equitable manner

Program Implementation

  • Serve as a positive representative of the University and Orientation & Transition
    Experiences
  • Implement family, morning, and night Orientation program responsibilities as assigned
  • Collaborate with the OTE team to navigate unexpected schedule changes necessary for
    programming
  • Greet new students and families, provide accurate schedule information, and resolve
    students and family questions in a timely manner to ensure a positive experience
  • Serve in a leadership capacity at a variety of Welcome Week events, ensuring they run
    smoothly and efficiently
  • Provide additional support for Orientation and Welcome Week events as needed

Compensation

Interns are paid $15.75 per hour. May work up to 12 hours per week during the academic year (November - May), and up to 39 hours per week during the summer (End of May through August). Interns are expected to live on campus between May and July, and will be provided residence from training in May until the last orientation in July. In addition to housing, a meal plan will be provided throughout the duration of Orientation programming. Room and board provided from May to July is estimated at a value over $4,000.

Qualifications

 


Required Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
  • At least three (3) completed semesters as a full time undergraduate student at a
    University/College by Spring 2027
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher to be maintained throughout employment and
    reviewed each semester
  • Enrolled full time (12 credits) as an undergraduate student through at least the Fall 2027
    semester, and not enrolling in Summer 2027 courses (without discussing with
    supervisor)
    • Not enrolled in courses past 3pm on Wednesdays in the Spring 2027 semester
  • Minimum availability of approximately 8 hours per week during the Spring 2027
    semester to fill the required hours of the position (during business hours)
    • Minimum availability of approximately 35 hours per week during the summer
      (May to August 2027)
  • Not planning to study abroad before September 2027 and will not graduate prior to
    December 2027
  • Previous campus leadership experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion
  • Strong multitasking and organizational skills, including high level of attention to detail
    and aptitude for detailed information
  • Ability to receive and delegate tasks, and be able to hold yourself accountable to
    completing tasks
  • Demonstrated strong public speaking skills and ability to present to varying audiences,
    including, but not limited to, new students, family members, campus partners etc.
  • Demonstrated time-management skills and flexibility, and ability to motivate self and
    others
  • Ability to positively receive and utilize constructive feedback

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in OTE (Orientation Leader, Welcome Week Leader, Operations Crew,
    Office Assistant, etc.) or OSA, OUE, MCAE student intern and/or leadership roles such
    as peer mentor, peer leader, kick off leader etc.
  • Prior event planning and public speaking experience
  • Strong organizational, administrative, customer service, and leadership skills including
    the ability to effectively communicate, delegate, and work to develop a team
  • Demonstrated initiative, punctuality, and reliability
  • Consistent, approachable, positive, friendly, and proactive customer service philosophy
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills with the potential and desire
    to develop these skills

Pay and Benefits

 

Pay Range: $15.75 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience
