Now Hiring: Part-Time Nursing Assistant – 6 South (UPMC Hamot)

UPMC Hamot is seeking a compassionate, dedicated Nursing Assistant to join our 6 South team. This part-time role requires rotating day/night shifts. In this role, you will provide essential patient care under the direction of healthcare professionals, ensuring the highest standards of quality, safety, and compassion.

About 6 South – Cardiovascular, Renal Transplant & Surgical Specialty Acute Care Unit
6 South is a 43-bed Medical/Surgical unit that provides post-operative care for adult Cardiothoracic, Vascular, and Gastric Bypass/Weight Loss patients. The unit also cares for patients requiring telemetry or oxygen monitoring and specializes in comprehensive care for kidney transplant donors and recipients, including post-transplant patients. Additional services include CPAP, BIPAP, and Optiflow oxygen therapy, glycemic control, vasoactive medications, anti-arrhythmic medications, electrolyte replacement, and hemodynamic medication administration.

Title and salary will be determined based on education and experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides direct patient care under the direction of the RN, including activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning patients.
  • Performs UPMC nursing core responsibilities, including blood glucose monitoring, vital signs, weights, intake & output (I&O), specimen collection, Foley care, and point-of-care testing.
  • Assists with telemetry monitor application/reapplication and supports Hospital-Acquired Condition (HAC) and patient safety indicator prevention.
  • Monitors, applies, and removes restraints per physician or hospital protocol; provides diversional activities to reduce or prevent restraint use and documents appropriately.
  • Reports changes in patient condition and provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, and organized patient care environment, including safety checks, cleaning equipment, changing linens, managing hampers, and keeping hallways clear.
  • Acquires, stocks, and distributes supplies and equipment; performs ordering, charging/crediting, and sets up patient care equipment within scope.
  • Delivers patient nourishments, fills water pitchers, distributes patient mail, and assists with meal tray delivery.
  • Responds to call lights, telephones, and assists with patient transport and other unit activities.
  • Completes clerical and messenger functions as needed by the department.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department.
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
  • Demonstrates respect for cultural diversity and maintains professional interpersonal relationships.
  • Supports a safe work environment and complies with all safety policies, including standard precautions and bloodborne pathogen protocols.
  • Strictly adheres to all patient care policies, procedures, and confidentiality standards.
  • Responds to emergent situations within the scope of the nursing assistant role.
  • Provides one-on-one patient observation/companionship as required.
  • Participates in self-development by identifying learning needs, accepting feedback, and improving skills and performance.
  • Assists with prioritization of tasks and seeks guidance when needed.
  • Demonstrates accountability, teamwork, and a positive approach to problem-solving and departmental improvements.

  • High school diploma or GED. 
  • Successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant training programKnowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques. 
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred. 
  • Work permit required if under 18 years of age.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
     
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
