This position serves as the Breastfeeding Coordinator for the Office of Nutrition Services (ONS), administering the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) Program for USDA’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program in West Virginia. The coordinator drives statewide initiatives to improve breastfeeding initiation and duration rates and manages the BFPC budget for program growth.
Core Responsibilities:
- Administer the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) Program: Manage the program, including oversight of the budget to support statewide growth for the WIC program.
- Drive Statewide Initiatives: Lead efforts to improve breastfeeding initiation and duration rates across West Virginia.
- Consultation & Training: Provide technical assistance to WIC staff, professionals, and paraprofessionals; oversee the local agency Breastfeeding Liaisons and conduct monthly meetings with staff; implement the USDA Breastfeeding Curriculum via direct and train-the-trainer sessions.
- Outreach & Collaboration: Serve as the ONS representative on the Association of Public Health Nutritionists; Maternal and Child Health Committee and coordinate with hospitals, medical professionals, and public health programs such as the WV Perinatal Partnership and WV Breastfeeding Alliance.
- Compliance & Data: Ensure standards for breastfeeding support services are met and analyze breastfeeding statistical data for federal reporting and management evaluations.
- Resource Development: Identify and create educational materials and resources for clinics.
- Crossroads MIS: Conduct testing in Crossroads to ensure that nutrition and breastfeeding screenings, nutrition risk codes, breast pump issuance, and nutrition/breastfeeding care plans are operational and adhere to state and federal policy.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications: Training: Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in foods and nutrition, dietetics, behavioral sciences, nursing, public administration, public health nutrition, or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
Required Experience: Three (3) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in nutrition while employed by a health or welfare agency, food clinic, hospital, child development center, school system, nutrition council; teacher of foods or nutrition in an accredited school or college; agent or food and nutrition specialist in the Agricultural Extension Program; or research worker in foods or nutrition.
Substitution: Graduation from a Coordinated Undergraduate Program in dietetics, completion of an AP4 Program in nutrition or dietetic internship approved by the American Dietetic Association, or a graduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.
Preferred Experience: Specific training and credentialing in the field of lactation management and care (i.e. CLS, CLC, CBS, IBCLC). Personal experience with breastfeeding is preferred.
