About this role

About the Department

Under general supervision, performs professional work at the full-performance level by promoting and presenting public health nutrition programs, evaluates and certifies the eligibility of applicants for participation in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program. Performs related work as required. Public contact and travel are required. May be required to supervise.

Position Duties

Key Responsibilities

Nutritional Assessment & Certification (20%)

  • Conduct nutritional assessments and evaluations for WIC applicants and participants.

  • Review anthropometric and hematological data.

  • Assess diet histories, identify nutritional risks, and determine participant eligibility.

  • Document all assessments and certifications accurately and in accordance with WIC policies.

Nutrition Counseling & Education (20%)

  • Provide individualized and group nutrition counseling.

  • Deliver education based on participant needs and WIC guidelines.

  • Prescribe appropriate food packages and benefits.

  • Offer educational materials, resources, and follow-up support.

Referrals & Participant Services (20%)

  • Refer participants to medical, healthcare, and social service providers.

  • Coordinate follow-up for identified health or nutrition needs.

  • Assist participants in accessing available community services.

  • Maintain confidential and accurate participant records.

Community Outreach & Program Promotion (20%)

  • Conduct outreach to increase awareness and participation in the WIC program.

  • Build and maintain partnerships with community organizations.

  • Communicate with authorized WIC vendors.

  • Represent the WIC program at community events and educational presentations.

Staff Coordination & Program Support (20%)

  • Supervise assigned staff (1 full-time, 2 part-time).

  • Provide training, guidance, and input for performance appraisals.

  • Recommend work assignments, review work, and authorize leave.

  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development.

  • Support special projects and evolving program needs as the WIC program develops.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in foods and nutrition, dietetics or public health nutrition; or a Bachelor's degree in a related field with 12 semester hours in nutrition.
AND
Experience: One (1) year of full-time or equivalent part-time paid professional experience in nutrition while employed by a health or welfare agency, food clinic, hospital, child development center, school system, nutrition council; teacher of foods or nutrition in an accredited school or college; agent or food
and nutrition specialist in the Agricultural Extension Program; or research work in foods or nutrition.
OR
Substitution: Graduation from a Coordinated Undergraduate Program in Dietetics, completion of an Approved Pre-Professional Practice Program (AP4) in Nutrition or dietetic internship approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, or a graduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a related field may be substituted for the required one (1) year of experience.
Special Requirement: A valid driver's license may be required.
