Oil and Gas Inspector Supervisor (Department of Environmental Protection Employees Only)

THE POSITION

As an Oil and Gas Inspector Supervisor with the Department of Environmental Protection, you help guide important field work that protects public health and the environment. This role allows you to support inspectors, lead daily operations, and help ensure safe and responsible oil and gas activity. You play a key part in overseeing well plugging efforts and improving compliance across the region. Your work strengthens environmental protection and supports strong community outcomes.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supervises inspection activities and supports field work related to the plugging, operation, and oversight of oil and gas wells. You guide staff, ensure safe practices, and help maintain accurate records and compliance actions. As an Oil and Gas Inspector Supervisor, you will perform the following duties:

• Staff Supervision: Manage daily activities, evaluate performance, and ensure safe work practices
• Compliance Oversight: Review inspections, enforce regulations, and support corrective actions
• Data Management: Maintain accurate records, update electronic systems, and ensure data integrity
• Field Inspection: Conduct inspections of wells during various phases and document findings
• Complaint Response: Investigate concerns, determine findings, and record results in tracking systems
• Technical Guidance: Provide advice to staff, operators, and the public on drilling and plugging requirements

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) full-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Pittsburgh. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

Organization or Location Restrictions:

• This posting is restricted to Department of Environmental Protection employees only. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Two years of experience as an Oil and Gas Inspector; or
• Two years as a Water Quality Specialist in the Department's Oil and Gas Program; or
• A Bachelor's Degree in Geology, Petroleum Engineering or in a closely related field, and three years technical experience in the oil and gas industry; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training that affords the applicant the Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities, including a minimum of three years of oil and gas technical program experience.

Special Requirements:

• You must be in possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Other Requirements:

• PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.

This position is subject to the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement or memorandum of understanding. 

You must be eligible for selection in accordance with merit system employment regulations.

• Class Restrictions for Promotion Without Examination Only - You must have or have held regular civil service status in one of the following classifications: 
  • Oil and Gas Inspector
• Employees who previously held regular civil service status in the job title of the position being filled are also eligible for promotion without examination.
• The promotion without examination requirements are issued in accordance with merit system employment regulations.
• Meritorious service is defined as (a) the absence of any discipline above the level of written reprimand during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the posting, and (b) the last regular or probationary performance evaluation showing an overall rating of satisfactory or higher. 
• Applicants must have a minimum of one year in the next lower class by the posting closing date with no break in service.
