About this role
Con Edison is seeking a strong, safety-focused leader to supervise 8 to 12 union mechanics responsible for the operation and maintenance of the steam distribution system. This role oversees workforce scheduling, materials and equipment, regulatory compliance, emergency response, customer service, and maintenance activities while minimizing impacts on city events, traffic, and community operations. The ideal candidate brings excellent communication and leadership skills, knowledge of steam distribution systems, ICS and HAZWOPER First Responder experience, and a commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence.
This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan.
Responsibilities
- Supervise a team of 8 to 12 union mechanics in the operation and maintenance of the steam distribution system
- Oversee and account for the use of materials, supplies, and equipment
- Schedule and manage personnel to optimize productivity and meet operating objectives and system constraints.
- Administer and monitor safety, environmental, and training programs
- Ensure compliance with Company policies and procedures, including EEO, Substance Abuse, Security, Environmental, and Code of Conduct requirements; develop and review steam distribution maintenance procedures
- Maintain departmental Quality of Life and Customer Service Index goals; investigate and resolve customer issues and complaints
- Ensure work schedules comply with all PSC requirements for traps, inspections, and calibrations
- Prioritize and coordinate work activities and logistics to minimize impact on city events, traffic, community operations, and steam service
- Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 2 years of relevant full-time work experience or
- Associate's Degree and a minimum of 4 years of relevant full-time work experience or
- High School Diploma/GED and a minimum of 5 years of relevant full-time work experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 2 years of relevant full-time work experience in field operations
- Ability to acquire and apply working knowledge of steam distribution piping systems and related equipment, including installation, maintenance, and repair activities, required
- Experience in emergency response under the Incident Command System (ICS) and qualification as a HAZWOPER First Responder, required
- New York City/New York State Asbestos Supervisor and NYS Inspector certificate must be obtained within 1 year of job assignment, required
- Excellent leadership and communication skills along with the ability to work as part of a team, required
- Supervisor experience, preferred
- Demonstrated customer service skills
- Demonstrates a high commitment to quality
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Driver's License Required
- Other: New York City/New York State Asbestos Supervisor and NYS Inspector certificate - 1 Year Required
- Ability to respond to system emergencies
- Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
- Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
- Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
- Work in, under, and on top of all types of company vehicles and/or equipment
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs
- Ability to work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and/or other equipment
- Perform work in underground vaults through manholes
- Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
- Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
- Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
- Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
- Ability to climb in and out of manholes and excavations
- Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
- Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
- Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
- Work rotating shifts, including nights, midnights, weekends, and holidays
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
