Department Information

 

The Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC) contributes to and enhances the services and collaborative efforts of medical research at Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine (IUSM). In addition to the provision of basic husbandry for a wide variety of laboratory animal species, the veterinary staff and other highly experienced laboratory animal professionals of the IU School of Medicine LARC provide training, supplies, and specialized service support for medical research.

The field of laboratory animal science has evolved substantially over the past 2 decades. We understand how the laboratory environment can both positively and negatively affect the results of research projects, and we recognize that an educated and empowered animal care team can be effective in working as an unofficial but critical member of the research team utilizing animal models. The LARC staff has deep experience in laboratory animal care and has achieved various levels of certification in laboratory animal science.

Job Summary

 
  • Provides animal husbandry and care for university animals used in research and/or education outcomes; performs various other laboratory animal support functions (such as cleaning and maintenance of laboratory and/or animal housing units and various equipment).
  • Receives, stores, and rotates feed, bedding, and other animal husbandry supplies and equipment; maintains proper sanitation, environment, and health status of housing units.
  • Maintains/verifies proper record keeping (census, animal health, document sanitation and equipment maintenance).
  • Provides technical support for LARC and research investigators (treatments, sample collection for sentinels, weaning litters, and administering diets, etc.); monitors animal health and observes for overt signs of disease and report any changes/concerns in animal health; handles, restrain, and transfer animals as directed.
  • Assists higher level Animal Care Technicians and facility users and performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 

EDUCATION

Required

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)

Preferred

  • Some animal experience

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

  • Valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University

Preferred

  • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification upon date of hire

SKILLS

Required

  • Proficient communication skills

Working Conditions / Demands

 

This position requires the ability to move about for long periods of time, perform repetitive movements, and operate equipment, tools, or controls. It also requires the ability to move items weighing up to 40 pounds. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential duties with or without an accommodation.
