UPMC Central PA Surgical Associates is seeking a friendly, organized, and patient-focused Patient Services Representative to join our team. In this role, you will serve as the first point of contact for patients, helping to create a positive experience while supporting the daily operations of a busy surgical practice.
Schedule
- Full-time, Monday through Friday
- 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- No evenings, weekends, or holidays
Responsibilities
- Greet and check in patients in a professional and welcoming manner
- Schedule appointments and coordinate follow-up visits
- Contact patients to schedule referrals and specialty appointments
- Complete patient pre-registration activities and verify demographics
- Assist with insurance information collection and documentation
- Maintain accurate patient records within the electronic medical record system
- Answer incoming phone calls and direct inquiries appropriately
- Support providers and office staff to ensure efficient patient flow
- Deliver exceptional customer service to patients, families, and visitors

Responsibilities:
- Provide a warm, welcoming greeting and exceptional customer service to all patients and visitors.
- Guide patients through the use of self-arrival technology or complete the check-in process at the front desk based on patient preference.
- Collect copayments and any other applicable patient payments at the point of service.
- Confirm and update patient registration and demographic information at checkout.
- Schedule follow-up appointments within the practice at checkout.
- Schedule or connect patients with the appropriate resources for ancillary services.
- Help patients navigate the healthcare system by providing clear, understandable instructions and follow up on unresolved questions or needs to ensure continuity of care.
- Utilize service recovery principles and take appropriate action to address concerns and enhance the patient experience in alignment with the UPMC Experience.
- Register patients in the Biometrics (fingerprint recognition) program and explain its benefits.
- Promote the MyUPMC patient portal and assist patients with registration and access when appropriate.
- Educate patients regarding their financial responsibilities and connect them with advocacy resources as needed.
- Verify insurance benefits through online verification systems and telephone inquiries with insurance carriers.
- Obtain patient or family member signatures for consent to treatment and financial responsibility forms while adhering to HIPAA regulations.
- Appropriately triage and distribute phone calls to clinical providers and other departments as needed.
- Assist with administrative office duties, including scanning medical records, faxing documents, and maintaining accurate records.
- Remain knowledgeable about the UPMC Patient Portal and confidently educate patients on its navigation and functionality to ensure continued access to health information and care services.
- Completion of high school graduate or equivalent is required.
- Experience with personal computer-based applications, other various office equipment and proficient typing skills are preferred.
- Two years of experience in a medical / billing / fiscal or customer service function is preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred. Prior experience with Medipac, Epic, or other health records systems is preferred.
