Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Supervisor II, the Supervisor I plans, supervises, and directs the work of a staff of four Senior Personnel Specialists. The Supervisor I plays an important and highly visible role in ensuring important human resources policies are followed and customers are satisfied. The Supervisor I is anticipated to possess extensive experience in payroll and Human Resources. Knowledge of the State of California Personnel Transactions experience is essential, including experience processing and/or reviewing complex personnel and payroll transactions.
The Supervisor I will be expected to:
- Plan and oversee a variety of important work processes related to payroll and benefits
- Ensure correct and timely payment of wages
- Independently identify and resolve the most complex transaction issues and problems
- Act as custodian of records
- Draft letters and other correspondence regarding highly technical subject matters
- Work and communicate with control agencies
- Serve on human resources-related task forces within the Department or with other departments
The Supervisor I acts as technical expert to the Department's Executive Staff; Director of the Office of Human Resources; Personnel Officer; program managers and supervisors, as well as to analysts and other staff members regarding human resources, payroll-related, and collective bargaining-related issues.

Working Conditions
This position has been designated as eligible for telework and is currently a remote centered position. The position will however require in-person attendance on a recurring basis. The selected candidate would report to Department of Justice headquarters in Sacramento when required for job functions, in-person meetings, trainings, etc. Expenses related to travel to the office when required are the responsibility of the employee. All telework schedules are subject to change and may be reevaluated at any time.

Possess extensive experience in State of California payroll and Human Resources

- Demonstrated leadership skills (in either a supervisory capacity or leading a team/project) while providing guidance to staff members and maintaining a positive and professional work environment
- Ability to consult, advise, and gain confidence of department management
- Experience managing multiple and changing priorities
- Ability to consult, advise, and provide direction related to complex payroll and personnel transactions
