Position Summary:

The College Physical Education Department is seeking a qualified and
enthusiastic Yoga Instructor to teach a one-credit, Pass/Fail undergraduate
physical education course. The course meets once per week for 80 minutes and
is designed to introduce students to the fundamental principles and practices of
yoga in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment.

The instructor will provide students with practical instruction in yoga postures,
breathing techniques, flexibility, mobility, balance, relaxation, and basic
mindfulness practices. The course should emphasize lifelong wellness, stress
management, body awareness, and the development of healthy physical activity
habits.

Students may enter the course with a wide range of previous yoga and fitness
experience; therefore, the instructor should be comfortable teaching beginners
and providing appropriate modifications for varying ability and experience levels.

 

Essential Functions:

The Yoga Instructor will:
• Plan and teach one 80-minute yoga class per week throughout the academic
term.
• Provide clear, safe, and appropriate instruction in foundational yoga poses and
movement sequences.
• Teach basic breathing, relaxation, mindfulness, flexibility, balance, and mobility
techniques.
• Demonstrate proper body alignment and safe movement mechanics.
• Provide appropriate modifications and progressions for students with different
experience and ability levels.
• Create a welcoming and inclusive learning environment for students of varying
fitness backgrounds.
• Educate students on the relationship between yoga, physical fitness, stress
management, recovery, and overall wellness.
• Encourage students to develop greater body awareness and an appreciation
for lifelong physical activity.
• Begin classes with appropriate preparation/warm-up activities and conclude
with suitable cool-down and relaxation activities.
• Monitor students during class and provide appropriate feedback regarding
technique, safety, and participation.
• Maintain accurate attendance and participation records.
• Establish and communicate course expectations at the beginning of the
semester.

• Evaluate students according to the established Pass/Fail requirements for the
course.
• Submit grades and other required academic documentation according to
College and departmental deadlines.
• Communicate professionally with students regarding attendance, participation,
course expectations, and other course-related matters.
• Follow all College policies regarding student safety, accessibility,
nondiscrimination, and academic conduct.
• Maintain a clean and safe instructional environment and report facility or
equipment concerns when necessary.
• Perform other course-related responsibilities as assigned by the Physical
Education Department.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

One or more of the following is preferred:
• Recognized yoga instructor certification, such as a 200-hour yoga teacher
training credential or equivalent.
• Previous experience teaching yoga in a college, university, school, fitness,
recreation, or wellness setting.
• Ability to safely teach introductory yoga to college-age students with varying
levels of experience.
• Knowledge of proper yoga technique, alignment, modifications, and basic
injury-prevention principles.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to create a positive, professional, and inclusive instructional
environment.

Compensation:

  • $2668 per contact hour

At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

NJIT considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, or other items.
