Position Description
Wake Technical Community College employs current Wake Tech students interested in working as Peer Tutors. Peer Tutors provide support in specific curriculum courses (such as STEM curriculum courses). Tutors assist students in improving academic achievement, support students by reviewing and clarifying learning problems, and provide useful study skills to students who need supplemental help. Tutoring is offered in person on various Wake Tech campuses.
Assignments and work schedules will vary as assigned on a semester-by-semester basis in various areas within the college.
Responsibilities and Duties (*Essential Functions)
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the primary job functions herein described.
*Attends all scheduled tutoring sessions and notifies program coordinator if a session must be cancelled
*Assists the ILC, DSS, and Academic Support Centers with meeting the needs of students who are requesting tutoring in specific STEM curriculum courses
*Provides subject-area knowledge and serves as a model for students in the techniques, strategies, attitudes, and beliefs that successful learners employ as they acquire new knowledge, solve problems, and complete academic tasks
*Prepares for tutoring sessions by reviewing any notes, handouts, and/or bookwork and begins all sessions promptly using time for academic tasks and to focus on the student’s needs
*Assists with understanding course content, helps with studying and note-taking, and reviews for tests and final exams
*Teaches and facilitates study skills and strategies
*Maintains absolute confidentiality regarding academic progress and/or personal information concerning students

Ability to perform normal duties with minimal supervision
Minimum Requirements
Must be a current Wake Tech student enrolled in Curriculum Education classes
Must have received a final grade of A or B in the course(s) they will tutor
Must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.00
Preferences
Have received a final grade of A in the course(s) they will tutor
