A Brief Overview
 

The Pharmacy Technician 2 is a support-level position that is accountable for assisting pharmacists in the retrieval, processing, preparation, and distribution of medications for patient administration. The Technician 2 functions in all foundational aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. All assigned activities are performed under the supervision of a Pharmacist. The Pharmacy Technician 2 is also responsible for performing all the functions of the Technician 1 when assigned.

What You Will Do
 

  • For Inpatient Pharmacy Tech 2, activities include but are not limited to: • May prepare compounded sterile products in strict accordance with USP <797> standards and aseptic technique protocols.• Assists in the preparation and labeling of non-sterile compounded formulations following USP <795> guidelines• Ensures the accurate and timely delivery of patient-specific medications to nursing units, prioritizing STAT orders to ensure timely patient care.• Restocks Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) and pharmacy technology systems, ensuring accurate counts and the removal of near-dated or expired medications.• Monitors drug stock levels in assigned pharmacy areas and med rooms; performs routine cycle counts and identifies items requiring reorder to prevent stockouts.• Assists with the orientation of new staff to specific tasks or workflows when assigned, focusing on demonstrating standard operating procedures.• Maintains a clean and organized workspace, adhering to all hand hygiene and garbing requirements.• Orients and trains new staff.• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • For Outpatient Pharmacy Tech 2, activities include but are not limited to:
    • Utilizes pharmacy systems to process prescriptions, including insurance adjudication and prior authorization submittal, and accurately prepares dangerous drugs for dispensing including counting, pouring, labeling, and performing non-sterile drug compounding and reconstitution.
    • Inventory, replenish, and maintain drug stock which includes automated dispensing cabinets and prescription pick-up kiosks.
    • Packaging and selling dangerous drugs to a patient or patient representative and answering questions to ensure a positive patient experience.
  • For Medication History Pharmacy Tech 2, activities include but are not limited to: 
    • Support medication history collection process for ED and inpatient units utilizing appropriate sources and communication.
    • Communicate effectively with patients during the interview and accurately record the medication history. 
    • Maintain open communication with nurses, patient care technicians, practitioners, and other personnel in the hospital to report important findings.
    • Duties may include those addressed above in the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Essential Functions.
  • For Infusion Pharmacy Tech 2, Infusion Technician Essential Functions align with Inpatient Technician Essential Functions.

  • Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
