Job Description:
This worker completes the majority of the work required to add all the new rolls to the machine at the front end, as follows:
- Use roll pusher to move rolls from floor into the staging area.
- Remove the wrapping from the rolls, fold it up on the floor and pull it into a waste pile along the side of machine.
- Remove the core plugs with a 6 -10# steel bar and put on cart.
- Slab damaged layers off the roll, using a utility knife or paper splay, folds these slabs and drags onto a pallet; slabs weigh up to 50#.
- Positions next roll on a sliding plate with an automated roll pusher, aligns the roll on the plate using their body to push-pull it, and uses an overhead hoist to lift the new rolls from the positioning plate onto the machine. 2-4 rolls are changed per hour average.
- Operates the controls to move paper through machine and splices the roll to the previous roll.
- Carries the empty cores (12-20#) to the opposite end of the machine, places on a core stand, applies tape to the core using hands to spin roll and place core on floor near back end for 2nd Operator to load it.
- Complete Make Ready functions including supplying ink to machine from barrels & pails; setting up barrels with pumps; moving barrels with dolly, attach hoses; adjust flow and take measurements, etc.
- Assist Operators to change cylinders and blades on the machine using chain hoist and carts.
Physical Requirements:
- Using simple grasping to lift, carry and manipulate slabs, steel bars, cores & plugs, tape, scraps, labels, etc.
- Push-pulling with hands removing wrapping from rolls; operating roll pushers, splicing rolls together, slabbing with utility knife/splay using 20-50# of force, moving barrels with dolly; moving rolls and pushing roll carts with 50-120# of force.
- Fine manipulation used to tape splices, remove & replace fasteners when changing blades, adjust ink flow, set up pumps & hoses, operate computer and various controls, manipulate tools and fasteners, complete paperwork, etc.
- There are several platforms along the machine that require workers to climb a step from 8-13” heights off and on throughout the shift. Workers also use stools with 2-4 steps to reach various levels of the machine.
- Lifting and carrying noted is all Essential.
- Occasional to frequent reps:
- Fold slabs, lift end & drag onto broke box 20-50# from floor to waist
- Core plugs 2# and steel plug bars 6-10# from floor to waist hts.
- Cores 12# up to 20# from 6” to 50” hts.
- Small tools, tape rolls, etc. <10#
- 20-40# buckets of ink or cleaners from 20-40” hts. and pumps from 36-76”hts.
- Heaviest Lift: Occasional lift one end of a 75# shaft from 10-50” hts. using hoist.
