Position Overview

The Project Engineer, Product Compliance who independently executes emissions certification and regulatory compliance reporting activities for International Motors' commercial vehicle products, leveraging data-driven compliance initiatives. This role independently manages complex compliance activities, including EPA, CARB, and ECCC emissions reporting, defect investigations, warranty reporting, recalls, and emerging compliance requirements supporting internal combustion engines and electrification and zero-emission technologies.

 

The Project Engineer partners with engineering, testing, quality, and program teams to ensure regulatory requirements are successfully integrated throughout the product development lifecycle. This position leverages data analytics tools and digital solutions to improve compliance processes, identify trends, support decision-making, and enhance Product Compliance Management Systems.

 

This role requires strong technical knowledge, regulatory expertise, and analytical capabilities to interpret requirements, manage certification activities, and provide guidance on compliance strategies. The Project Engineer may also lead projects, coordinate cross-functional initiatives, and mentor less experienced engineers.


Responsibilities

  • Lead emissions compliance reporting activities, including EPA, CARB, and ECCC related to defects, warranty, recalls, and certification programs.
  • Partner with engineering, testing, quality, and manufacturing teams to investigate compliance issues and develop effective solutions.
  • Analyze compliance and vehicle performance data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for process improvements.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards, reports, and digital analytics solutions using tools such as Power BI, Databricks, and other data platforms.
  • Provide regulatory guidance and technical recommendations to engineering teams throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on compliance processes, data management, and operational efficiency.
  • Support Product Compliance Management Systems and help advance digital transformation initiatives within the compliance organization.
  • Lead assigned projects or workstreams, including coordinating cross-functional activities, tracking risks, and communicating project status.
  • Provide technical mentorship and knowledge sharing to developing engineers and team members.
  • Prepare technical documentation, regulatory reports, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science and at least 2 years of product design/development and/or computer science experience

OR

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science and at least 1 year of product design/development and/or computer science experience

OR

  • PhD in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science

Desired Skills

Regulatory & Compliance Expertise

  • 2+ years of experience supporting emissions compliance, certification, or regulatory programs within the automotive or commercial vehicle industry.
  • Experience with EPA, CARB, and/or ECCC emissions regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Knowledge of emissions warranty reporting, defect investigations, recalls, and compliance documentation.
  • Understanding of vehicle certification processes, regulatory submissions, and compliance milestones.
  • Familiarity with emerging EV/ZEV regulations and alternative powertrain compliance requirements.

 

Technical Engineering Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of diesel and commercial vehicle powertrain systems.
  • Knowledge of emissions control technologies including SCR, DPF, DOC, LNT, and EGR systems.
  • Experience with emissions testing methodologies, including dynamometer and PEMS testing.
  • Understanding of vehicle validation, certification testing, and regulatory compliance processes.
  • Ability to interpret technical requirements and translate them into engineering actions.

Data Analytics & Digital Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, including data analysis, visualization, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience with data analytics and visualization tools, including Power BI or similar platforms, and data processing/query tools such as SQL, Python, MATLAB, Databricks, or equivalent technologies.

 

Quality, Risk & Process Improvement

  • Experience with structured problem-solving methodologies such as 8D, 5-Why, and Fishbone analysis.
  • Knowledge of quality management systems including ISO 9001 and environmental management systems such as ISO 14001.
  • Understanding of risk management principles and compliance risk mitigation strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive process improvements and support continuous improvement initiatives.

 

Communication & Leadership

  • Strong technical writing skills with experience preparing regulatory documentation and engineering reports.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical topics clearly to engineering, leadership, and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, influence stakeholders, and lead collaborative initiatives.
  • Experience mentoring engineers or serving as a technical resource within a team.

Industry Experience

  • Commercial vehicle, heavy-duty truck, automotive, or related transportation industry experience required.
  • Experience supporting vehicle development programs, certification timing, and engineering validation activities.
  • Knowledge of industry trends related to emissions regulations, electrification, and future mobility technologies.
