RECREATION FACILITY MAINTENANCE I, II, III

Job Summary: The Recreation Facility Maintenance series performs custodial, grounds, operational, and maintenance work to support the safe, clean, and efficient operation of City recreation facilities, including ice arenas, swim centers, outdoor pools, and surrounding grounds. Responsibilities include maintaining cleanliness, performing routine and skilled maintenance and repairs, supporting ice and aquatics operations, assisting with event setup, operating equipment, and preparing facilities for daily and seasonal use. Work varies by position level, from routine tasks performed under supervision to advanced troubleshooting, coordination, and lead-level responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Recreation Facility Maintenance I:

• Maintains the cleanliness, safety, and condition of indoor and outdoor recreation facilities, grounds, restrooms, public areas, and assigned spaces; replenishes supplies and removes snow, ice, litter, and other hazards.
• Maintains grounds through mowing, trimming, landscaping, irrigation, fertilizing, mulching, weed control, and related seasonal activities.
• Supports ice arena operations, including ice resurfacing, edging, repair, skate sharpening, rink setup, and cleaning and maintenance of ice-related equipment.
• Supports pool and aquatic facility operations by performing vacuuming, deck cleaning, filter checks, backwashing, debris removal, seasonal opening and closing, and assisting with monitoring mechanical and chemical systems.
• Inspects facilities, grounds, equipment, and operational systems to identify safety hazards, damage, maintenance needs, and required repairs; reports issues and recommends corrective action as appropriate.
• Performs routine maintenance and repairs involving plumbing, electrical, HVAC, pumps, motors, structures, facility equipment, vehicles, scoreboards, doors, locks, lockers, and related operational systems.
• Sets up, operates, maintains, and stores hand and power tools, custodial equipment, grounds and pool equipment, ice resurfacers, snow removal equipment, and City vehicles.
• Opens, closes, secures, and prepares recreation facilities for daily and seasonal operations; sets up and tears down equipment and spaces for programs, rentals, tournaments, swim meets, skating events, and other special events.
• Completes required documentation, including maintenance logs, checklists, work orders, chemical readings, inspections, inventory records, and other operational records.
• Follows City safety policies, personal protective equipment requirements, chemical handling procedures, equipment operating standards, and other applicable regulations and procedures.
• Communicates professionally with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, vendors, user groups, and the public; reports facility, equipment, safety, mechanical, and supply needs in a timely manner.
• Assists with training and provides task direction to seasonal, temporary, part-time or less experienced employees as assigned; performs other duties as assigned.

Recreation Facility Maintenance II:

• Performs all duties of Recreation Facility Maintenance I.
• Journey-level position responsible for skilled maintenance, repairs, equipment operation, and troubleshooting with greater independence.
• Performing skilled building, grounds, pool, ice, and equipment maintenance.
• Completing skilled plumbing, electrical, HVAC, pump, motor, irrigation, and structural repairs.
• Performing turf maintenance, fertilizing, spraying, and irrigation repair as trained or licensed.
• Troubleshooting pool systems, mechanical systems, and facility equipment.

Recreation Facility Maintenance III:

• Performs all duties of Recreation Facility Maintenance II.
• Advanced-level position responsible for complex maintenance, troubleshooting, planning, coordination, and lead-level support.
• Diagnosing and resolving more complex issues involving recreation facilities, ice systems, pool systems, HVAC components, pumps, motors, valves, irrigation systems, equipment, and building infrastructure.
• Coordinating daily maintenance priorities, preventative maintenance schedules, seasonal work plans, and repair projects.
• Assisting with specialized purchasing, inventory, contractor coordination, vendor communication, inspections, and project preparation.
• Reviewing work for completion, safety, quality, and compliance with procedures.
• Responding to urgent repairs, after-hours facility issues, weather-related needs, and operational concerns as assigned.

 
Qualifications:
Recreation Facility Maintenance I:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Previous experience in custodial work, facility maintenance, grounds maintenance, aquatics maintenance, ice arena operations, building trades, or related work preferred.
• Must possess a valid South Dakota driver’s license, or ability to obtain one by date of hire.
• Must possess CPR/First Aid certification or be able to obtain within 180 days of hire.
• Must obtain and maintain a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification within 180 days of hire.

Recreation Facility Maintenance II:

• Must meet all Recreation Facility Maintenance I requirements. In addition:
• Two years of experience in facility maintenance, recreation facility operations, pool maintenance, ice arena maintenance, grounds maintenance, building trades, mechanical maintenance, or a closely related field.
• Must possess and maintain a South Dakota Pesticide Applicator certification/license.

Recreation Facility Maintenance III:

• Must meet all Recreation Facility Maintenance I and II requirements. In addition:
• Four years of progressively responsible experience in facility maintenance, recreation facility operations, aquatics maintenance, ice arena maintenance, mechanical systems maintenance, grounds maintenance, building trades, or a closely related field.
• Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A or Class B.
• Experience providing direction, training staff, coordinating projects, or managing preventative maintenance tasks preferred.

 
Work Environment:

• Employee may be required to work evening and weekend hours as needed.
• Exposure to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions and extreme heat or cold.
• Occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; extreme heat; and risk of electrical shock.
• Noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
• Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.
• Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
• Occasionally required to climb or balance and talk, hear, taste or smell.
• Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
