About this role

The Department of Biology is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Research Assistant to support an active research program focused on the comparative genomics of sexually and asexually reproducing species. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research investigating genome evolution, mutation accumulation, and the genetic consequences of different reproductive strategies.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Principal Investigator and research team to conduct laboratory and computational research activities, assist with data collection and analysis, support student training and mentoring, and contribute to the broader educational and outreach missions of the research program.

This is a 50% time, 1-year Specified Term position.

This position not eligible for University sponsorship for employment authorization.

Position is 100% onsite.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform research activities based upon protocols developed by other research staff or principal investigators of the research project. 
  • Arrange and plan daily activities to prepare research protocols. Set up and operate research materials or equipment. 
  • Collect and track data, perform data entry for reports, and maintain records of methods used. 
  • Track various indicators of project progress and summarize reports to the research team.

Education Required

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Biology or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Required Qualifications

  • Experience collecting and culturing Potamopyrgus antipodarum.
  • Experience designing and executing science outreach activities.
  • Experience extracting DNA and using PCR to amplify extracted DNA. 
  • Experience with gel electrophoresis.

Desired Qualifications

  • M.S. degree (with thesis) in Biology.
