Job Description Summary

The HUB Resource Center (The HUB OC) is a nonprofit organization in Orange County that provides supportive services, resources, mentoring, and stability-focused programs to youth and young adults experiencing homelessness, housing insecurity, or other challenging life circumstances.

The HRC Resource Center Intern supports the day-to-day operations of the Hub Resource Center by assisting with Basic Needs services, operating service stations, supporting front desk responsibilities, and engaging with patrons throughout the day.

During Basic Needs hours, interns will help ensure that services and stations operate efficiently, safely, and with hospitality. Outside of Basic Needs hours, interns will help operate the front desk, welcome visitors, answer questions, connect patrons to staff and resources, assist with administrative responsibilities, and support the overall flow of the Resource Center.

This internship is highly relational. Interns should be willing to engage with people from different backgrounds, learn about homelessness and local resources, work alongside staff and volunteers, and contribute wherever needed

Through this internship, students will have opportunities to develop experience in:
  • Homeless services and resource center operations
  • Trauma-informed and person-centered engagement
  • Front desk and client-facing operations
  • Community resource navigation
  • Professional boundaries
  • Conflict resolution and de-escalation
  • Volunteer and service coordination
  • Nonprofit operations
  • Working with community partners
  • Communication and relationship building
  • Teamwork and servant leadership
  • Understanding barriers related to homelessness and housing instability
As interns demonstrate reliability and grow in their knowledge of the HRC, they may be given opportunities to take greater ownership of stations, projects, front desk responsibilities, activities, or other areas of the Resource Center.

Responsibilities

Basic Needs & Station Support
  • Assist with the daily operation of Basic Needs services and assigned stations.
  • Help operate services such as showers, laundry, clothing, meals, charging, mail, and other available resources.
  • Welcome patrons and explain service processes, expectations, and schedules.
  • Help maintain organized service lines, waitlists, appointments, and station flow.
  • Prepare stations before services begin and help reset and organize stations after services conclude.
  • Maintain clean, safe, and welcoming spaces.
  • Restock supplies and communicate inventory or supply needs to staff.
  • Assist staff and volunteers with maintaining consistent procedures across service stations.
  • Help ensure that services are provided fairly, respectfully, and according to HRC policies.
Front Desk & Resource Center Support
  • Assist with front desk coverage beyond Basic Needs hours.
  • Welcome patrons, visitors, volunteers, and community partners entering the Resource Center.
  • Help identify the reason for a patron’s visit and connect them with the appropriate staff member, appointment, class, or resource.
  • Answer general questions regarding HRC programs, schedules, services, and community resources.
  • Assist with check-ins, sign-ups, appointment coordination, and other front desk systems.
  • Support phone calls, messages, paperwork, filing, data entry, and other administrative responsibilities as assigned.
  • Help communicate upcoming classes, appointments, events, and opportunities to patrons.
  • Maintain an organized, professional, and welcoming front desk environment.
  • Communicate important concerns, conflicts, or patron needs to appropriate staff members.
Patron Engagement & Relationship Building
  • Build positive and appropriate relationships with patrons.
  • Engage patrons in conversation and help create an environment where people feel known and welcomed.
  • Practice active listening while maintaining healthy professional boundaries.
  • Learn about available HRC and community resources in order to better direct patrons to appropriate support.
  • Encourage patrons to participate in classes, programs, community activities, and other opportunities available through the HRC.
  • Recognize when a patron may need additional support and appropriately connect them with a case manager or other staff member.
  • Treat every individual with dignity regardless of their circumstances, behavior, background, or current situation.
Team & Operational Support
  • Work collaboratively with HRC staff, volunteers, interns, students, and community partners.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, supervision, and learning opportunities when appropriate.
  • Assist with special events, community events, donation organization, outreach, classes, and other HRC activities.
  • Help organize supplies, donations, clothing, and resource materials.
  • Communicate clearly with team members regarding needs, concerns, incidents, and follow-up items.
  • Be willing to step into different responsibilities as site needs change.
  • Follow HRC safety procedures, confidentiality expectations, professional boundaries, and organizational policies.

Required Qualifications

  • Interest in serving individuals experiencing homelessness or housing instability.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.
  • Dependable, responsible, and willing to take initiative.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and highly relational environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Willingness to receive coaching, feedback, and direction.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Willingness to assist with both direct-service and administrative responsibilities.

This position may include periods of standing, walking throughout the facility, organizing supplies, setting up service stations, and assisting with light lifting. Interns should be comfortable working directly in a community resource center environment serving a diverse population.

Desired Qualifications

  • Interest in social work, human services, psychology, sociology, public health, nonprofit leadership, ministry, community development, or a related field.
  • Previous volunteer, customer service, front desk, community service, or nonprofit experience.
