What to Expect

• Responsible for assisting the Safety / Environmental Officer in developing, implementing, and maintaining a risk management program that includes, but not limited to: Asbestos, Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs), Electrical Safety, Ergonomics, Fall Protection, Fire Safety, Hazardous Materials, Hearing Conservations, Industrial Hygiene, Lock Out/Tag Out, Occupational Health and Safety, and Respirator Protection. 

• Have Knowledge of a wide range of safety and occupational health concepts, principles, and practices, laws, and regulations applicable to the performance of complex administrative responsibilities which requires the planning, organizing, directing, operating and evaluation of a safety and occupational health program. 

• Independently conducts safety inspections in MCCS facilities and playgrounds, at special event sites, on gas/electric powered equipment, tools, fire extinguishers, eyewash stations; making recommendations for immediate corrective action when employee/patron safety is compromised.  This includes writing, coordinating, implementing directives, recommending appropriate remedies and procedures, training, or use of personal protective equipment (PPE).  Prepare and submit for review, written inspection results of all detected hazards and recommended corrective actions.

• Performs a variety of functions in support of the organization's environmental program by assisting in the proper identification, containing, labeling, storage, and disposal of a variety of hazardous materials (HazMat) based on applicable federal, state, and local regulations. 

• Performs site inspections at hazardous material storage, transport, or operational facilities where the problems typically are easy to identify and conventional in nature. Evaluates work practices, determines compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and recommends changes to control or eliminate potential or existing hazards or violations. 

• Reviews and validates hazardous material and waste turn-in documents for accuracy and submission to Installation Resource Conservation and Recovery.  Plans and carries out the procedures to complete the work and handles problems in accordance with established policies, applicable precedents, and previous training. 

• The work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions (e.g., working at a storage, disposal, or spill site where there is risk of exposure to pesticides, hazardous chemicals, radioactive materials, or other pollutants). The safety/environmental technician must use protective clothing and/or gear.

• Work requires standing, walking, bending, and lifting and may be required to work in extreme environmental conditions.  Must be able to lift and carry objects up to 45lbs independently and objects over 45lbs with assistance.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.  

What are we looking for?

• Must have 3 years' experience that demonstrates knowledge of classification storage and disposal of hazardous materials.  

• Must be familiar with OSHA and EPA regulations.  

• Must have good oral and writing skills.  

• Must possess excellent customer service skills and knowledge of general clerical methods and techniques.  

• Skill to prepare documentation and presentations in a proper format in accordance with naval correspondence.  

• Ability to operate a personal computer and use various software to create and generate reports.  

• Must be proficient in ESAMS AFSAS/RMI or become proficient within two years.
