Primary Purpose
The Section Engineer of Gas Transmission Engineering role provides technical leadership for the planning, design and execution of complex gas transmission projects on BGE’s system. This role involves managing complex, innovative gas transmission initiatives that are critical to gas system reliability, compliance and integrity management. Additionally, this role provides direct expertise and oversight for BGE’s gas transmission MAOP Program and TIMP programs, as well as mentoring and technical development of junior engineers on the Gas Transmission Engineering Team.
Key Knowledge/experience needed for this role:
- Ability to analyze and interpret complex gas transmission systems, projects and designs
- 7+ years of professional engineering experience, or 6+ with Masters or PE
- Preferred: Lead Responsible Engineer experience with large gas construction projects
- Preferred: Detailed knowledge of gas regulations including DOT 192 code and BGE Gas Engineering Standards
May be required to work extended hours for coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies
Primary Duties
- Leads highly technical consultation and training through OJT/OJE (may include some class room instruction as well) on highly complex and unique technical areas requiring the application of advanced engineering principles and may require advanced knowledge of complex analog and digital field test equipment. (25%)
- Leads the work activities of project teams and others on the implementation of large specialized technical projects and/or programs in order to develop studies, proposals, commissioning plans to support safely energizing and placing major utility and customer systems and equipment on system. (25%)
- Performs assignments while acting independently, and may lead multi-discipline teams, may include providing direct oversight of contractors (15%)
- Participates in department/project management planning, and monitor performance for the accomplishment of committed results. (10%)
- Provides detailed technical training, mentorship, peer review, and/or guidance to other (10%)
- May participate in technical and industry societies and committees to enhance knowledge of new technologies or issues in area of company interest. Serves as an expert in specialized area (5%)
- Acts as an expert witness and provide expert opinions for internal committees or as required (5%)
Job Scope
- Highly influential on strategic management decisions that can have a major impact on the company.
- Support/Lead employees and or contractors in the execution of plans developed to initially energize utility or customer equipment/systems and placed On System.
- Set direction for the organization in regards to technical issues.
- Applies technical knowledge to help promote a safe work environment and to enhance customer satisfaction
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering discipline with at least 7 years of professional engineering experience. (1) (3) (See Note)
- Completed Assignments and Projects showing evidence of:
- Ability to analyze and interpret complex gas transmission systems, projects and designs.
- Knowledge and ability to apply problem solving approaches and engineering theory.
- Knowledge of engineering designs, principles and practices.
- Advanced knowledge and experience with regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, practices, and advanced engineering principles (2).
- Advanced knowledge of latest technologies necessary to perform a variety of specialized unique or complex assignments for various installation types of services.
- *Note: there are a limited number of personnel available in the industry with the required knowledge, ability and experience. (1) Master's degree in Engineering reduces the OJT experience requirement by 1 year. (2) License must be issued by the state in which you are practicing. (3) PE License reduces the OJT experience requirement by 1 year.
- Note: Items (1) and (3) are mutually inclusive, whereby the maximum experience requirement reduction is one (1) year (e.g., in the case of an employee with both a master's degree in Engineering AND a PE license, the minimum experience requirement would be reduced by one (1) year.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate degree (1) or Graduate level work in Engineering, Business Administration or Project Management Certification
- Possess Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certification and/or Professional Engineer license (2) (3)
- 1-3 years of professional supervisory experience and/or demonstrated ability to lead the work activity of others.
- Strong written and oral communication/presentation skills, report generation & technical writing skills
- Industry expert who participates or leads industry committees or working groups or has published technical documents.
- Advanced experience with gas utility infrastructure and design, such as system analysis, planning, design coordination, standards development, or project execution. Also, direct experience with BGE Program Approval processes (AIC/PCC).
- A working knowledge of analysis software packages such as CYMDIST, PSS\E, Python, PLS-CAD, Pole Foreman, Power BI, or similar.
