Job Summary

Mechanical Design Engineer — Design for Packaging

Customer is seeking a top-notch Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Design for Packaging team as the subject matter expert in both Product and Packaging Design, setting the standard for future products and sites. This team drives design efficiencies to reduce inbound costs by ensuring parts are designed with packaging and logistics in mind, while engineering the most optimal route from a part's origin to its end destination. The role will drive high-impact changes to part design and manufacturing line equipment, rethinking part presentation and driving optimization across the entire supply chain. It requires innovating without relying on prior designs, drawing on deep experience in packaging and product design. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, works well as part of a strong, agile, highly motivated team, and takes pride in thoroughness, analytical ability, organization, and collaboration.

Responsibilities:

  • Create part packaging solutions optimized for automation and packing density for new Tesla products, driving high-impact changes to part design and manufacturing line equipment
  • Collaborate with Product Design and Material Flow Engineering to populate Plan for Every Part (PFEP) packaging input, optimizing part design for inbound logistics and automation pick-ability
  • Establish best practices for automation packaging and maintain a single source of truth for lineside packaging/handling requirements, prioritizing modular, off-the-shelf technologies to reduce design duration and enhance scalability
  • Collaborate with Vehicle Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Packaging Engineering, and Factory Design to problem-solve toward the best end-to-end solution
  • Present and negotiate across product, manufacturing, and packaging constraints, backed by technical and financial analysis

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Packaging Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years in mechanical design, or a combination of mechanical design and highly automated manufacturing, including designing components/systems from concept through production validation
  • Extensive knowledge of packaging design and material handling equipment, and the challenges they present in a manufacturing environment
  • Preferred: in-depth technical knowledge of prototyping, manufacturing, and assembly processes
  • Familiarity with automation equipment and fixture requirements; understanding of how equipment design integrates into existing or new systems
  • Experience with CATIA, SolidWorks, or similar modeling software, including drafting engineering drawings and conducting tolerance stack-up analysis
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Self-motivated, able to manage multiple parallel-path projects under pressure and tight deadlines
