Posting Details

The New Mexico General Services Department (GSD) delivers essential centralized services to support the operations of state government. GSD is responsible for ensuring the efficient management of statewide facilities, transportation assets, risk management programs, procurement, printing, and surplus property. This position is housed within the Technical Support and Services Bureau (TSSB), which provides comprehensive IT services to all GSD divisions. TSSB supports end-user computing, network and systems administration, cybersecurity operations, application development, and enterprise service delivery. The bureau plays a critical role in maintaining reliable technology services, strengthening security, and enabling GSD staff to serve constituents effectively.

Why does the job exist?

The Senior IT Network Administrator serves as GSD's senior network subject matter expert and provides technical leadership for the design, security, reliability, modernization, and continued development of the agency's network infrastructure. This position is a key technical resource for GSD's network modernization initiative, including a major network core refresh and transition from the existing Cisco environment toward a Fortinet-based network architecture.

How does it get done?

Key responsibilities include:
- Managing the network software monitoring tools, diligently reviewing event logs, alerts and alarms to guarantee network security, stability and availability on a daily basis.
- Overseeing the upkeep of all network-related hardware, software end devices, as well as, monitoring and management tools.
- Safeguarding GSD's network infrastructure against cyber threats and breaches.
- Taking charge of the design, configuration and implementation of GSD's networks, network devices and affiliated software.
- Executing disaster recovery measures for network devices and their respective operating systems.
- Handling and resolving network/security-related Service Desk inquiries to ensure customer satisfaction.

Who are the customers?

This position provides critical IT services and operational support for the New Mexico General Services Department, its internal divisions and bureaus, as well as its sister state agencies that rely on GSD managed systems and infrastructure. In addition, this position coordinates closely with contractors, vendors, and external partners to ensure secure integrations, reliable service delivery, and effective stewardship of statewide technology resources.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess:

- Extensive experience in enterprise network engineering, network operations, and infrastructure management.
- Background in deploying and managing CISCO network solutions.
- Experience handling CISCO firewalls and switches.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills involving complex network, connectivity, firewall, VPN, wireless, and security issues.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Information Technology, Engineering, or similar technical degree and three (3) years of experience in network administration and design. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current and valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification, as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in an office setting at the Joseph Montoya Building with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Work extended hours and occasional travel may be required. Sitting/Standing, bending, squatting, climbing, and reaching for extended periods of time may be required. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Occasional travel and overtime may be required.
