The Department's seven regulatory divisions play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and soundness of products and services that impact the lives of practically everyone in the State of New Mexico on a daily basis. The Office of the General Counsel for the RLD provides legal counsel to the Superintendent, as well as legal oversight, advice, and direct legal representation as necessary, to all divisions of the Department.

RLD participates in E-Verify and will verify employment upon hire.

This posting will be used for ongoing recruitment and may close at any time. Applicant lists may be screened more than once.

Why does the job exist?

This Office of the Superintendent (OS) Paralegal position exists to provide advanced legal assistance to the Chief General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel and staff attorneys of the Regulation and Licensing Department (RLD) in regard to all legal matters, and serves as a backup to the OS Senior Paralegal position for duties including but not limited to the Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA) affecting the RLD. This position also serves the critical role of providing secondary support for Divisions of the RLD experiencing temporary high demand for legal support such as litigation support or IPRA support; this position may be temporarily assigned by the Chief General Counsel to support individual RLD Divisions as necessary.

How does it get done?

The key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to researching legal data for briefs or arguments for the Department based on statutory laws or decisions, filing pleadings for the Department with court clerks, serving copies of pleadings on opposing counsel, preparing affidavits of documents, and updating and maintaining document files and correspondence on cases.  During the annual Legislative Session this position serves as the primary backup to the OS Senior Paralegal position providing coordination and record keeping concerning the RLD's receipt of and response to Fiscal Impact Responses to proposed legislation.  Another key responsibility involves responding to IPRA requests and serve as the point of contact with constituents in regards to these requests.  As needed, this position may be assigned by the supervisor to provide direct paralegal support functions to any of the RLD divisions that are in special need of assistance with ongoing litigation, IPRA, or other legal matters.
