Position: Senior RF Development Engineer
Location: Hampton, NH
Ardent Concepts, an Amphenol company, is a leading designer and manufacturer of high performance multicoaxial and coaxial interconnect assemblies, connectors, and interfaces used in the development of next generation semiconductors, quantum computers, and electronics systems. Ardent was built on core technologies that yield the smallest, fastest, and most electrically efficient compression mount connector interfaces worldwide. As data rate requirements increase and devices and systems shrink, Ardent's products deliver superior signal integrity in a dense footprint that can be reusable across programs to maximize cost savings.
Our focus is on helping bring next generation computing to market through novel connector designs for test & measurement, OEM applications, and specialized military applications. Ardent's patented contact technologies are well suited for advanced multi-GHz applications such as board stack connectors, coaxial connectors, FPGA sockets, flex circuit connectors, probe interfaces, and mezzanine card connectors. We have a complete line of high-performance interfaces for the most advanced chipsets such as RF devices, ASICS, switches, processors, and MEMS devices. We support chip to chip, chip to board, board to board, and flex to board applications.
We are currently seeking an experienced Senior RF Development Engineer to join our R&D team in Hampton, NH. This position will provide technical leadership in the development of next-generation RF and passive-component technologies, including in-line attenuators, filters, IR filters, terminations, and related RF components, from initial concept through prototype, validation, qualification, and production.
This position will focus on the development of in-line attenuator and filter technologies for advanced and cryogenic applications, while establishing parallel internal and external development paths to accelerate product introduction. The engineer will translate system-level requirements into component architectures and specifications, develop and validate designs, and work closely with internal engineering teams, customers, suppliers, and external technology partners.
A key aspect of this role will be the ability to drive multiple development paths in parallel. This includes independently developing component designs internally while simultaneously working with external suppliers and technology partners to evaluate, develop, and qualify complementary technologies. The engineer will maintain technical ownership of product requirements, performance, validation, and integration while leveraging internal and external resources to accelerate development and bring new products to market.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on RF engineer with strong RF and microwave fundamentals who can move effectively between design, simulation, fabrication, laboratory characterization, troubleshooting, and partner integration. The successful candidate will have the technical depth and independence to establish development approaches, make engineering decisions, and lead projects with limited direction.
This position is located in our Hampton, NH office.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Own the development of RF and passive components from concept through production, including in-line attenuators, low-pass/high-pass filters, IR filters, terminations, and related RF components.
- Translate system-level electrical, mechanical, environmental, and application requirements into component-level architecture, specifications, and designs.
- Develop and evaluate component architectures, materials, manufacturing processes, and technologies to achieve required RF performance, reliability, cost, and scalability.
- Perform RF and microwave design, modeling, simulation, and analysis of passive components across relevant frequency ranges.
- Design, build, and evaluate prototypes, test fixtures, and measurement hardware to rapidly iterate and validate new concepts.
- Develop and execute characterization and validation plans using Vector Network Analyzers (VNA), TDRs, spectrum analyzers, power meters, and other RF test equipment.
- Develop and optimize RF measurement techniques, calibration methods, test fixtures, and de-embedding approaches to ensure accurate component characterization.
- Analyze frequency-domain and time-domain data, identify sources of performance variation, and drive design and process improvements.
- Lead parallel internal and external development paths, maintaining technical ownership while coordinating component development with suppliers, technology partners, and contract manufacturers.
- Identify and evaluate external technologies, suppliers, materials, and manufacturing capabilities that can accelerate product development or provide differentiated component solutions.
- Lead technical discussions and design reviews with external development partners, including defining requirements, reviewing designs, evaluating prototypes, and resolving technical issues.
- Establish technical specifications, qualification requirements, and acceptance criteria for externally sourced or co-developed components.
- Work closely with internal mechanical, electrical, signal integrity, manufacturing, quality, and R&D engineers to integrate passive components into cable assemblies, connectors, cryogenic systems, and other interconnect architectures.
- Support the development of components for cryogenic and extreme-environment applications, including characterization and qualification over temperature and other applicable environmental conditions.
- Investigate the effects of materials, geometry, manufacturing processes, plating, interfaces, and assembly techniques on RF performance and reliability.
- Develop engineering drawings, specifications, test plans, qualification plans, technical reports, and other documentation required for successful product development.
- Lead technical root-cause investigations and corrective actions related to RF performance, manufacturing variation, material behavior, and component failures.
- Support transition of successful designs from R&D into manufacturing, including development of production test methods, process controls, and acceptance criteria.
- Provide technical support to customers and internal Sales/Applications Engineering teams during product evaluation and application development.
- Identify opportunities for new products, technologies, materials, suppliers, and manufacturing approaches that can expand the company's RF and cryogenic component portfolio.
- Share technical knowledge and establish best practices for RF design, simulation, characterization, and development within the R&D organization.
- Mentor less-experienced engineers and contribute to the growth of the team's RF and passive-component development capabilities.
- Manage multiple technical projects and priorities while maintaining a strong focus on development schedules, technical risk, and product performance.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BS in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, Microwave Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, RF/Microwave Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
- 5+ years of industry experience in RF, microwave, passive component, interconnect, or related product development.
- Demonstrated experience independently taking RF or passive-component products from concept through prototype, validation, and production.
- Strong understanding of RF and microwave fundamentals, including transmission lines, impedance matching, S-parameters, insertion loss, return loss, attenuation, VSWR, power handling, and electromagnetic behavior.
- Direct experience designing, developing, or characterizing passive RF components such as attenuators, filters, couplers, terminations, matching networks, or related microwave components.
- Strong hands-on experience with RF test and measurement equipment, including VNAs, TDRs, spectrum analyzers, power meters, signal generators, and related equipment.
- Experience developing RF test fixtures and measurement methodologies, including calibration, de-embedding, and measurement uncertainty considerations.
- Experience with RF/microwave simulation tools such as Ansys HFSS, Ansys Designer, Keysight ADS, or equivalent.
- Experience with CAD and mechanical design tools for RF components, fixtures, or assemblies is a plus.
- Experience selecting and evaluating RF materials, including dielectric materials, conductive materials, ceramics, quartz, polymers, coatings, plating systems, or other RF-relevant materials is a plus.
- Experience with cryogenic, low-temperature, high-vacuum, or other extreme-environment applications is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated experience working directly with suppliers, technology partners, contract manufacturers, or external engineering organizations.
- Ability to establish technical requirements, evaluate partner proposals, review designs, and maintain technical ownership of externally developed components.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify root causes from both analytical and experimental data.
- Demonstrated ability to independently establish development strategies and drive multiple technical projects in parallel.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to engineers, suppliers, customers, and management.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced R&D environment where requirements and technologies may evolve throughout the development process.
- Hands-on engineering mindset with a willingness to design, build, measure, troubleshoot, and iterate.
