WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

This position is responsible for the leadership and supervision of both Civilian and Commissioned positions. The incumbent will serve and protect the public by preventing crime, eliminating hazardous circumstances, preserving peace and public order, investigating criminal acts and traffic violations, apprehending criminals and violators, processing service, testifying in court, conducting public relations activities, and fulfilling other public needs as set forth in statute, regulation, or Standard Operation Procedures Directive.

THE WORKING CONDITIONS YOU CAN EXPECT:
This position is situated in Bethel.  The daily work environment involves engaging with the field, in both small teams and larger groups of task-driven individuals working cases with significant and/or wide-ranging impact



WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

  • Monitor and manage the post's caseload using ARMS management tools, shift briefings, and in-person interactions. 
  • Skilled in writing clear and concise police reports and able to review and edit subordinate's reports.
  • Knowledgeable regarding policies and procedures outlined in OPM, SOP, Alaska Statutes, and Admin Manual.
  • Leadership skills teaching, mentoring, and evaluating trooper recruits  
  • Proficient in the use of ARMS, TRACS, and Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Sergeant must be collaborative, flexible and a problem solver and open to completing other tasks as assigned.
  • Bethel Patrol Troopers' primary caseload involves felony-level person and property crimes, crimes involving domestic violence, property crimes, search and rescue, civil disputes, court security and prisoner transport, and motor vehicle collisions.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years of experience as a law enforcement officer certified by the Alaska Police Standards Council or by an equivalent agency in another U.S. jurisdiction outside the State of Alaska that is recognized by the Alaska Police Standards Council, where at least one year of the required experience is as a State Trooper with the State of Alaska, Department of Public Safety.

Special Note: 
Some positions, as identified by the department, may require specialized training or experience (investigations, vessel operation, or licensed aircraft pilot).

Possession of an "Intermediate Certificate" as a police officer issued by the Alaska Police Standards Council is desirable, but not required.

FIREARMS

This position requires the use or possession of a firearm or ammunition. In accordance with the federal Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997 (PL 104-208), if you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, you may not hold this position. 

A "misdemeanor crime of domestic violence" is an offense that is (1) a misdemeanor under Federal or state law; and (2) has, as an element, the use or attempted use of physical force, or the threatened use of a deadly weapon, committed by a current or former spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim, by a person with whom the victim shares a child in common, by a person who is cohabiting with or has cohabited with the victim as a spouse, parent, or guardian, or by a person similarly situated to a spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim. 

If you have ever been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, do NOT apply for this position.



BACKGROUND CHECK
This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check.  Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.



CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT
The successful candidate will be required to read, understand, and agree to via signature, an agreement of confidentiality concerning the work commonly encountered within the Department of Public Safety to qualify for this position.
