Summary
Sergeants supervise law enforcement personnel providing law enforcement services and protection to the citizens of Tarrant County. Operations Bureau supervisory duties include, but are not limited to, supervision of personnel assigned to: Judicial, Patrol, Investigations, Warrants, and Community Relations-Training functions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Schedules assigned subordinate personnel.
2. Conducts unit briefings.
3. Assists superiors and/or designated personnel with administrative duties.
4. Supervises operational activities of assigned subordinate personnel.
5. Supervises preliminary investigations of all major crimes and incidents.
6. Responds to major incident locations to coordinate and direct law enforcement responses and establish an Incident Command System to manage the incident.
7. Notifies senior managers of major crimes, serious accidents, significant employee complaints and other extraordinary happenings in a timely manner.
8. Conducts personnel and equipment inspections.
9. Monitors and enforces all Sheriff's Office policies, procedures, and rules.
10. Monitors employee use of communications and information systems to ensure compliance with all applicable law, policy and procedure for their use.
11. Evaluates duty performance of assigned subordinate personnel.
12. Uses information systems to perform essential duties including employee performance evaluation, incident investigation and review, use of resources, workload and performance measures, and to create/prepare documents and reports.
13. Documents citizen and employee allegations of misconduct and initiates appropriate action(s) to investigate the complaint.
14. Verifies that reports are accurate and legible.
15. Assists subordinates as needed.
16. Coordinates all unit activities and actions as needed.
17. Provides court testimony as required.
18. May coordinate and implement in-service training programs for department/unit employees to meet identified training needs.
19. Must maintain physical fitness in order to perform the essential duties of the position.
20. Use reasonable force when necessary.
21. Must work assigned duty hours.
22. Must enforce all applicable rules and regulations of given position.
23. Must complete mandatory paperwork.
24. Must produce legal documents required by assigned duties.
25. Perform all other related duties as assigned including duties required of subordinate Deputy Sheriff-Operations personnel.
26. Attend and complete all training required by statute or TCOLE to maintain required certification(s) and (licenses).
SKILLS - The following skills and abilities must be either demonstrated to an acceptable level of proficiency prior to selection, or achieved afterward within a normal and customary time period:
1. Must have good interpersonal and public relations skills.
2. Experience or training in public speaking desirable.
3. Must be able to understand, interpret and properly apply court orders, relevant State statutes including the Code of Criminal Procedure, Penal Code, Transportation Code, and all other statutes, ordinances, policies and procedures required to perform essential job duties of the position assigned.
4. Must be able to prepare official documents required to perform assigned functions including but not limited to interoffice memos and letters to other agencies, affidavits, investigative reports, and case filing documents.
5. Must be proficient in the use of defensive tactics requiring physical force including the use of intermediate impact weapons and firearms.
KNOWLEDGE – The following knowledge must be either demonstrated to an acceptable level of proficiency prior to selection, or achieved afterward within a normal and customary time period:
1. Must have a working knowledge of the Code of Criminal Procedure, Penal Code, Transportation Code and other State statutes, and County ordinances.
2. Must have a working knowledge of applicable policies including but not limited to: Sheriff's Department policies, Civil Service Rules, Standard Operating Procedures, and the Tarrant County Employee Handbook.
3. Must have a working knowledge of department organization and functions.
4. Must have a working knowledge needed to use basic Microsoft Office Suite software functions (word processing and spreadsheet).

Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or GED. Associate’s degree or equivalent preferred but not required.
Three (3) full-time years of related law enforcement work experience as a patrol officer, investigator, warrant officer, or judicial services officer with the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office. Two (2) full-time years of patrol work experience (of the three years related experience) is preferred.
Must have Texas Basic Peace Officer Certification (Intermediate preferred) and be licensed in good standing as a Peace Officer in the state of Texas.
Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License and/or obtain a license within 30 days.

Physical Demands and Work Environment & Other Requirements
While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to stoop, sit, walk, run on occasion, strenuously climb stairs or ladders and lift up to 100 lbs. Must be able to exert physical force when necessary and lift, twist and throw persons during defensive tactics regularly May sit at a work station for prolonged periods of time writing, typing, using a computer, or telephoning citizens or personnel for information. May lift to pick up evidence and run/fight to apprehend fugitives daily. May be exposed to communicable diseases.
There is exposure to household type cleaning agents (such as diluted bleach, alcohol based window cleaner, chlorine based cleanser); and occasional exposure to pesticides. There is occasional exposure to inmate control devices that emit pepper agents via aerosol spray, gel or foam. There is the potential of exposure to toxic smoke.
SPECIAL ADA PHYSICAL STATEMENT:
Applicants must demonstrate distant and near vision of 20/30 corrected or uncorrected in each eye and must be able to read typewritten material with or without glasses. Must be able to see without glasses (with or without the use of contact lenses) in order to wear an air mask; and in order to be able to see to defend themselves and others; applicants with uncorrected vision worse than 20/100 (Snellen) must wear contact lens while working; Must be able to distinguish basic colors (without the use of x-chrome lenses); Must be able to hear the conversational voice, with or without the use of hearing aid. Must be able to lift an approximately 40 lb Self Contained Breathing Apparatus for emergencies during fires; and, must be able to partially lift and drag an average weight person of approximately 185 lbs, a distance of 75 feet for the evacuation of individuals unable to assist themselves during emergencies; Must be able to physically restrain hostile and combative subjects; Must be physically able to participate in defensive tactics training and annual refresher training: Must be able to work any shift; and, Must be able to communicate in clear English during emergencies.
