Why does the job exist?

The New Mexico Department of Wildlife's Shooting Range and Skills program leads the Department's effort to provide skill-based learning opportunities to introduce and improve shooting sports skills through outreach events and community partnerships. This position will work with communities to develop new or improve existing shooting and archery ranges throughout the state, providing shooters and archers with safe, legal shooting opportunities in New Mexico. The Shooting Range and Skills Manager will provide pathways for people to develop skills across disciplines and into hunting activities.

How does it get done?

The Shooting Range and Skills Manager position requires experience creating partnerships and leveraging resources to expand recreational shooting and archery opportunities throughout the state. They will provide supervision and support to direct employees, contractors, and volunteers who work in these education programs. Help build and maintain a sense of teamwork to move programs forward while developing innovative programs designed to support New Mexicans and the wildlife and wild spaces found here. Onboard new volunteers and provide support for current volunteers, ensuring that programs can maintain consistency and meet standards.

Specific duties include:
- Building a foundation designed to develop safe and ethical recreational shooting opportunities in New Mexico.
- Providing skill-based learning opportunities to introduce and improve shooting sports skills through outreach events and community partnerships.
- Developing new or improving existing shooting and archery ranges throughout the state that provide shooters and archers with safe and legal shooting in New Mexico.
- Providing paths for people to grow skills between disciplines, and into hunting activities.
- Overseeing the development and maintenance of Department-owned and public shooting sports facilities throughout New Mexico.
- Creating new partnerships with existing ranges and working with communities to start new ones, as well as looking for opportunities on Department properties where appropriate.
- Identifying shooting and archery range needs, developing and overseeing a grants program to help grow facilities in communities across the state, and managing and improving the Department¿s current shooting ranges.
- Partner with other program managers and the community to create opportunities for shooting and archery enthusiasts to expand those skills into hunting and conservation experiences.
- Overseeing federal grant applications and reporting to continue growing programs in the shooting and archery sports.
- Supporting and assisting educational program managers with large public events, including: Outdoor Adventure Show, Youth Hunter Education Challenges, R3 and marketing efforts, Archery programs, off-highway vehicle safety and awareness programs, conservation education programs, fish and wildlife projects, marketing and informational efforts, etc.

This position works with youth and adults from across New Mexico by promoting public access to shooting and archery ranges and providing opportunities to develop skills in these sports.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidates will have experience in the following:
- Development and implementation of innovative programs that are related to recreational shooting sports and archery.
- Success in building partnerships and the coordination of large projects.
- Experience in developing interactive, educational programs that can be duplicated by coworkers, partners, contractors, or volunteers;
- Experience supervising employees, volunteers, and contractors;
- Experience building and maintaining a budget, writing federal grants, and ensuring purchases meet agency standards.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field of study from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of professional level experience operating within parameters and guidelines directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience. A hiring agency will designate a portion of the required experience to include supervisory and/or specialized experience. Any required licensure, certification or registration shall be defined at the time of recruitment and will be in addition to the above requirements.

Employment Requirements

Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Work will be performed primarily in an office or indoor setting, but on occasion will be performed in the outdoors during all types of weather conditions and in close proximity to fish and wildlife. Weekend and varied hours occasionally will be required for this position. Office work will include sitting, standing, bending, and lifting up to 60 pounds. Outdoor work will include standing, walking, bending and occasional lifting up to 60 pounds. Requirements will include frequent operation and travel in a motor vehicle, and may occasionally include OHV operation, horseback riding, watercraft operation and aircraft travel.
