About this role

UW-Madison College of Engineering’s TOPS Lab develops transportation safety and mobility systems through research, partnerships, and applied technology solutions. The Software Engineer/Developer I/II will design, develop, test, maintain, troubleshoot, and support large-scale applications, while collaborating with engineers, researchers, students, and external stakeholders on system requirements, deployment, performance, reliability, and technical documentation.

What you'll do:

  • Prepares program documentation and training requirements
  • Maintains and troubleshoots applications, systems, or websites
  • Implements data structure and systems performance strategies
  • Reviews application design specifications, codes new applications, and makes enhancements to existing applications
  • Develops or modifies technical specifications for low-complexity projects using disciplined software development practices
  • Tests and debugs programs, and prepares systems test data
  • Reviews application design specifications, codes new applications, and makes enhancements to existing applications

What they're looking for:

  • • At least 2 years of professional software development experience in a business or production environment
  • • Proficiency in using Java programming language
  • • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with experience using modern front-end frameworks or libraries (e.g., Bootstrap, React, Angular)
  • • Proficiency in object-oriented design and programming
  • • Experience with databases (e.g., Oracle database, PostgreSQL, MSSQL)
  • • Experience working across the software development lifecycle including requirements, architecture, design, development, testing, documentation, and maintenance
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science of related field preferred
  • Successful applicants are responsible for ensuring their eligibility to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the United States, a lawful permanent resident, a foreign national authorized to work in the United States without need of employer sponsorship) on or before the effective date of appointment. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship
  • • Experience with backend Java frameworks such as Spring or Hibernate
  • • Experience in JUnit and integration testing frameworks
  • • Experience using front-end mapping libraries such as Leaflet, OpenLayers, or Google Maps API
  • • Experience with collaborative workflows and CI/CD pipelines
