## The Role We are seeking entry-level Software Engineers to join teams across GM’s Data Software Engineering and Cloud organizations. In these roles, you will contribute to the development, deployment, and support of reliable, scalable data platforms and cloud services that enable business-critical products, applications, analytics, and engineering workflows. You will work alongside experienced software, data, and cloud engineers to build services and tools for data ingestion, processing, storage, serving, and platform automation. This is an opportunity to grow your software-engineering skills while gaining hands-on experience with distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and large-scale data platforms. ## What You’ll Do - Contribute to the development, deployment, and improvement of data and cloud services. - Learn and apply operational-excellence practices, including service-level objectives and indicators, monitoring, alerting, troubleshooting, and incident response. - Collaborate with software, data, ML, and cloud engineers to understand user needs, translate requirements into technical solutions, and help build self-service capabilities. - Implement features and technical projects from design through testing, deployment, and support, with guidance from senior team members. - Participate actively in sprint planning, code reviews, design discussions, documentation, and retrospectives. - Write maintainable, well-tested code and help improve the reliability, performance, cost efficiency, and usability of team services. - Develop familiarity with cloud infrastructure, deployment automation, observability, and the full operational lifecycle of production systems. - Build knowledge of the tools, architectures, and data workflows that support our technology ecosystem. ## Your Skills & Abilities - Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or another relevant field; or equivalent real-world experience. - 0–2 years of software-engineering experience, including internships, co-op experience, academic projects, or equivalent hands-on work. - Foundational proficiency in at least one programming language such as Java, C++, Go, or Python. - Understanding of software-engineering fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, testing, version control, and code review. - Familiarity with developing or supporting services, applications, or data-processing systems. - Exposure to at least one major public cloud provider, such as Azure, GCP, or AWS, through coursework, projects, internships, or professional experience. - Strong problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and learning skills. - Interest in contributing to reliable, scalable systems and supporting services in a production environment. ## What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage - Familiarity with distributed systems, APIs, microservices, containers, or cloud-native development. - Exposure to deployment automation, monitoring, logging, metrics, or other observability practices. - Academic, internship, or personal-project experience related to autonomous vehicles, robotics, machine learning, or large-scale data platforms.
