## Job Description The Software Engineer II is an early- to mid-career contributor that has a combination of formal education and experience in the software engineering field. They are responsible for researching, designing, developing, analyzing, testing, and implementing software operating or application systems. They communicate project information to client, project manager, or other design personnel working on projects. They maintain good working relationships with clients and staff. They write and maintain complete documentation. They support team members and ensure established goals and deadlines are met. They keep management informed of status and significant problems. ## Role Summary The Software Engineer II is an early-to-mid-career contributor who independently delivers features and integrations within an assigned area. They develop and maintain web applications, services, and integrations across the team's platforms, write tested and maintainable code, and support the reliability of student- and staff-facing systems. They work within established team architecture and patterns, collaborate in Agile teams, and grow their expertise through knowledge-sharing and mentoring from senior engineers. ## Essential Functions and Responsibilities - Develop and maintain web applications and services using Java/Spring Boot, Node.js, TypeScript, Angular, REST, XML, and HTTP, following the team's established patterns and standards. - Independently deliver features and integrations on time and to quality when given design guidance; write clean, maintainable code and effective unit and integration tests. - Design features and components within the team's existing architecture; participate actively in design and code reviews. - Build and support integrations between third-party products and existing infrastructure (e.g., ServiceNow, Salesforce, Nuxeo/Hyland DAM). - Contribute to performance tuning and reliability of high-utilization, 24x7 systems; participate in the on-call rotation and resolve incidents in the team's services. - Diagnose and resolve defects in existing and complex systems without introducing regressions; address technical debt within their area. - Work within the team's CI/CD pipeline and version-control/branching strategy; troubleshoot build and deployment failures. - Work with internal customers to gather business processes and requirements; read beyond the stated requirement to deliver implied non-functional needs (security, monitoring, accessibility). - Apply secure engineering practices (OWASP), authentication/SSO (SAML/OAuth2/OIDC), and FERPA-compliant handling of student data. - Ensure accessibility (WCAG/ADA) in student- and staff-facing web applications. - Use AI-assisted development tools effectively and responsibly (no student PII in prompts), verifying output before use. - Identify risks and dependencies in their own and the team's work; suggest mitigations and escalate appropriately. - Write clear technical documentation that others can build from.
